No they are way more extreme but I do believe if the tories could marketise absolutely everything with no pushback, they would in a heartbeat. most of the guys in govt are big milton friedman fans and he was a nutcase imo, the guy was that much on market freedom he was opposed to driving tests and licenses for example.

Don't be stupid, I'd have much preferred that neither group were there today but it was inevitable after the antics of the anarchists last week...

No Tony, that's not quite accurate is it? The other day you said you hoped there would be trouble. I asked you to clarify that and you said I've given you my answer.

Are you a bit disappointed there wasn't a bit more fighting to watch?

To be fair - and I’m not denying the central thrust of the post, these have been fuelled entirely by a straw man media narrative - this incident just didn’t happen. There are pictures of what looks like somebody with a blade against someone’s throat, but turns out to be a misthrown punch. There’s footage of the guy getting up and walking away.

What I find concerning is that they’re STILL at it. The Mail on Sunday are launching a ‘Save Winston’ campaign, without including ANY accounts of anybody actually wanting it removed:

I guess it’s much easier to sell papers and get viewers when you’re constructing an opponent that doesn’t exist. For the rest of us, though, it’s nauseating.

I did gather from the '3rd generation' bit that he'd been born in England, but it is perhaps telling that it was just natural for you to define him by his heritage alone and write 'Indian' rather than 'Indo-Englishman' or just 'Englishman.' I do it myself when referring to people I know -- I suppose it shows how much we do value national or ethnic origins. We are all hyphenated in any case, given that no original Britons survive; it's just that some arrived earlier than others. (My own hyphen would have Estonian/Nordic in front.) I once read a line to the effect that the 100% Englishman is a 99% mongrel, but for the life of me I can't remember whether that was meant as a joke or as a serious observation. It's true, though.

This all leads to yet another digression: the idea of nationality, or what is it that unifies a people into a nation. If you accept Herodotos, it is shared blood and customs (including the gods) and language. And that both ties in to comments above about people feeling most comfortable with others of their own kind, and leads one to wonder if someone can ever truly "belong" in a society alien to their own. There's bound to be elements that one cannot embrace, and hence my comment about being on the outside -- not always, not in everything, but every now and again. Churchill would be one such element for your friend, and for my hypothetical Englishman, Tipu.

It's not just nauseating, it's dangerous. So many people believe what they're fed by mainstream media narratives. They don't look deeper or research and think for themselves, make no effort to find a balanced account of things. And it stirs up more hate and division. Yesterdays scenes were utterly predictable, and I fear we'll only see worse in the coming weeks.

I suppose 3rd generation indian is different to just indian but its just semantics at this point. 3rd generation indo englishman sounds weird haha. oh absolutely, historically we got invaded a lot and it shows in people's ancestral heritage. I think my personal one is Norman but I haven't gone much deeper than that, as much as I find these things interesting.

Indeed but do we not adapt our values and customs to reflect the society we now inhabit? Churchill being a hero was an undisputable fact and his atrocities seemed to rarely if ever were mentioned when we were previously just a majority white monoculture. With the advent of multiculturalism, is that a view of history that speaks to most naturalised multicultural brits and how do we accommodate the views of what are now our fellow englishmen if a sizeable number diverge as I would suspect? There are certain parts of our shared culture I even as a white guy born here don't identify with even though it would technically be my heritage, so do we carry on with a view that is no longer as representative of people as it once was? This is exactly the kind of debate I think we should be having and its nice we can express our views respectfully.

This is from a few years ago but I think it's a brilliant summation of the psychology we're seeing play out.

I agree, the point you make regarding the 'slashed throat' seemed to catch out a fair few prominent twitter posters. One in particular, a well followed ex forces now on the media circuit, posted the lad had died from his injuries only to delete the tweet about half an hour later. By then the damage had been done, likes and retweets all over the place for something that hadnt been confirmed.

I agree. I've been following his stuff for a while. I find him hugely inspirational. His interview with Cathy Newman was gold.

Listen to 'the crisis of masculinity'. It's the greatest thing I've ever listened to. His podcasts are something else.

So they went to London to protect some statues and ended up fighting the police.

    That went well.

Very little to disagree with in most of what he says there, although more generally I think he just does a very good job of dressing up familiar tropes with sophistry and gives certain ideas a veneer of academic respectability they otherwise wouldn't have. I prefer Akala personally
