Ha ha, I know it was probably a bit much but having never previoualy paid any thought to the environmental footprint of the club, the OP struck a chord and I thought it was worth thinking about.

Personally, I'd be very interested in finding out what the club policies and practices are in terms of sustainability and environmental impact because it's an area that all individuals and organisations should be taking very seriously and football clubs (which are often referred to as community assets) could arguably be expected to lead by example in areas such as this.

That said, I wouldn't be advocating going all out and turning VP into a solar farm any time soon, for a start it's ridiculously expensive for a club in our position. Fair enough, if we were getting £120m a year TV money in the PL then the start up costs would be negligible but as it stands, it's probably out of our reach.

Another thing to consider is how much time we have left on the lease at VP. Apparently solar panels have a life span of 30-40 yrars and we're talking about a range of at least 15-16 years to break even. I think that our lease runs out before the break even point and certainly within the lifespan of any solar panels so we'd need to be absolutely sure that our long term future at VP as assured before undertaking any such venture.

How about siting 11Wind turbines on the pitch in City shirts
The power generated will make us more environmentally friendly, and of course we'd stand a better chance of winning.

The OP focused on Flood Lights and then the Caron footprint. In respect of energy consumption, then the cost to heat the ‘internal’ parts of the Main Stand and to a lesser extent the Kop must be a substantial part of the fuel bill. That added to the actual lighting in all the stands, is probably greater than the Flood Lights. My supplier offers, ‘a tariff which is 100% renewable using only naturally replenished sources’ (apparently). So you are correct, there are solutions, which would not require the installation of Solar Panels/wind turbines or heat pumps.

Same with my current supplier 100% renewable (allegedly)
As to the floodlights, they are a low cost, Southampton for example they calculate the floodlights are the equivalent of 137 kettles being boiled.
Energy usage as a whole should be addressed, one of the very few advantages of the London Stadium is the lack of parking which means more use of public transport.

You mean there is parking at VP! The small car park would struggle to hold over 100 cars and there is another one at the rear of the Kop. Sadly VP is not blesssed with a great public transport network.
If I drive home after an afternoon match, I get home about 17.50. If I get the train/bus then it is 19.10!

I know there's very little parking at VP, and I also know that as an Audi driver that my sat nav/dab etc would unlikely still be in place! No park & ride options?

It is a 25 mile drive, so not a brief trip up to Eccleshill!

I guess for a lot of us, then something at the end of the M606 could make sense. I would still have a journey of around 20 miles.

Quite frankly I am happy to walk and then drive. My Dingolfing motor has been quite happy in a back street near White Abbey Road during a match. ;)

A kettle is about 2 - 2.5 Kw, so around 300 Kw. Not a huge amount considering the number of people who see the game but still a large amount of energy. I suggest no night matches, more mid week holidays for everyone and kick offs brought forward to 2 pm, maybe earlier. Fatties not allowed to drive or catch public transport. They have to walk, run or cycle to the ground even if they live 50 miles away. No burgers allowed to be eaten or served in the ground, only veg burgers. Global warming beaten!

Wow!!, must be a slow news/argument week. This may be a little long and covers my time on the BCFC Board from 2009 to 2016.
Energy use and the like was one of the first tasks I covered on joining as part of my brief was to reduce costs where I could use my experience from the areas of my activity on the Morrison Board where we were the first retailer nationally to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard for reducing energy usage and Carbon footprint. Working with David Dowse we first set about reducing costs of the utilities by re-tendering Electric, Gas and Phones. Having done that we then looked at actual use (how fast the meter spins). We already had rainwater harvesting from the Kop roof for use in the stadium and extended lighting controls to operate on movement sensors in a lot of areas. In those times the players got changed at VP and drove to and from Apperley Bridge so we introduced car sharing and encouraged the same for the 'drive to work', all to reduce the Carbon footprint.
In March 2010 we had a full energy survey of the Stadium carried out and implemented further recommendations leading to BCFC receiving the Carbon Trust Standard, one of only three of ninety two clubs to qualify, by which I hope it is realized how seriously we took the subject.
Moving on to floodlights, the comment on here is right. The running costs are very low and payback against new controls, etc. would not be viable. Equally to put solar panels has been looked at but is not viable, roof loadings and pay back periods which run beyond the remainder of the lease make it a non-runner. Added to that the income from the generating companies (feed in tariff) has been slashed as more and more electricity is produced by methods such as solar, in other words the generating companies want their cake and eat it.
As of today, I assume there is still a keen eye on this but as someone no longer on the Board I can't say. Hope that helps a bit.

I believe the dangers from climate change, global warming and greenhouse gases are as nothing compared to the real threat - from the green movement. Trillions are going to be spent on crackpot schemes which will keep hundreds of millions of people in unnecessary impoverishment on the altar of what has been described as the religion for people who think they're too smart for religion. The recent UN report is just the latest piece of scaremongering.

Yes I have. Instead of more holidays I've decided that the working week is cut to just one day per week. Free beer for everyone and every single person is given £50,000 at birth to spend as they see fit when they reach maturity i.e. 75 years old.
Do I still get your vote?
