Good point. Many of Baldwin’s long diagonals are hit from just outside our penalty area to the touchline level or near level with the other penalty area. They are very long passes indeed and necessarily hit very hard. So it’s not surprising that they don’t all come off. But when they do, they immediately put us in a very attacking position. Which is no doubt why GA encourages him to keep doing it.
Even when they don’t go directly to our wing backs (and would therefore not be counted as ‘successful’ passes) they often require the oppo fullback to concede a throw in well into their own half, thus giving us possession in an advanced position.
I wonder how many of the other ‘long passers’ on the list are making such ambitious long passes on a routine basis? I suspect the stats are comparing apples with pears.

Yeah, absolutely. It's like a winger having a very low retention rate because he's constantly taking on the full back.

It looks poor statistically but in reality he's far more likely to create goalscoring situations than a winger with a high retention rate because he always cuts back and plays the safer ball.
