I wish I could remember. It was a reserve match in the 50s and my Dad's cousin said he'd score a goal for me, which he did.

Sometime in 1979 ish-Possibly Newport County-got free tickets from Nab wood Sports Centre. Do recall a night game V Ipswich early 80's in league cup which we narrowly lost (they had Marriner and Wark and Cooper in their team IIRC) and recall being very sad going home on the bus back to Cottingley. Certainly recall McNivens hat trick on a night game, Tony Delahunty on Pennine Radio and Staniforth knocking in a late equaliser in a home game. Was in Bfd End those days but moved to kop and Paddock. Halycon days.

My dad says 1979 Wigan at home. I do remember games against tow law town with Goodman scoring a ht beating reading and Brentford when we scored 5 but probably the game I remember In detail is beating hull away 84/85 when I spiked my hand on the fencing at boothferry park when we went 2-0 up and Eric McManus came to check on me.

Can’t remember the actual first game but you mentioned the Newcastle cup game in 63 , that’s the one that sticks in the memory as it was a 3rd round game but wasn’t played until March due the bad weather that year.

1967 FA cup 1st round against wrexham. 7-1 I think, I was only 6. I'd been to see Avenue a few times prior to that, no idea who they played. Mixture of the kit and obviously the result made the impression and once you're hooked you're hooked.

Game was re - arranged , as the first one was postponed due to about a foot of snow on the pitch ( went with my old man who was brought up in Undercliffe ) , got to Newport only to be told the game was off , so April.it was

First away game for me too was Avenue. It seemed like a different world travelling to the other side of town for the first time.

1981 home to Aldershot, probably one of the first Sunday games. Stood in paddock with my older brother. No idea what result was, can’t remember.

Do you remember Greg Abbott , Martin Singleton and John Hendrie all arriving from Coventry roughly around the same time. I think it was Cherry who recruited them ?

I’m reading Hendrie’s book at the moment as he mentions them all being at Coventry together and being released around the same time.
However you are spot on ..According to Hendrie it was Greg, John and Martin arriving in that order , all signed by Cherry as his assistant who we also know well , Terry Yorath ,who knew them all from when he was also at Coventry.

I only remember because Abbott played for us in the early 80s and I knew hendrie came just before we won promotion in 85
