Smallwood Has Left The Building

I thought he was offered a new deal?

 

A York fan at work has said that he thinks they have made an approach for Smallwood, he heard something on the grapevine at the weekend.

That's a shock to be honest. I don't get the bit where he says we haven't offered a new contract though?

He will be a big miss in my opinion. I wonder if the Power signing was made in the knowledge that he was leaving?. Even so, we need another defensive midfielder in my opinion.

 

Looking forward to seeing who we replace him with unless Power is his replacement. Sad to see him go but we have to be ruthless if we want to compete at the top level of league 1, most of last seasons squad isn't at that level.

This can't be right. I'm sure the ITK's said he was offered 2 years with the option of a third.

 

Would assume we offered him 1-year or 1-year +1 in our favour and Richie wanted a 2-years at least.
I don’t doubt that someone in league 2 or the National League will give him a deal that suits his needs

Wow surprised and disappointed about this I sincerely hope we bring in someone as good in that position it will be difficult

 

Negatives - a good captain has left us, do think we missed him in games last season, wealth of experience, never injured, wore his heart on his sleeve.

Positives - he is 35 years old, L1 will be pacier than L2, already signed Max Power, Smallwood will have been a high earner so frees up a decent whack in wages.

All in all would have preferred him to stay, he would have gotten the 2 year deal he was clearly after but its not like we lost a £500k player.

 

Assuming he wanted longer security but the club were standing firm at 1 year? Which given his age makes total sense really. We looked totally lost without him at the end of the season, hopefully Power can be the plug we needed.

Fantastic player, proven winner and wish him all the best in his next place.

 

Why get rid of one who is

 

Seems the stumbling block is Smallwood wanted 2 yr deal and city offered 1 with option of another however it was based on appearances. So I am guessing the management are not convinced he can do the same amount of games in L1 at his age although I beg to differ.

 

He says they haven’t offered him a new deal but the club announced they have. Assume negotiations broke down and the club took back their offer?

 

After the Matt Derbyshire farce, you can’t argue with the club’s stance.

All the retained list said was "ongoing discussions with" but no mentions of any player actually being offered a contract.

At least there's a fans forum next week for everyone to ask the powers that be about this decision.
