It can't be Shepherd though because I can't see the cryptic clue in his name to a car magazine!

 

If only we could ship Oliver out in some way, I know Park would be heartbroken but those funds could be put to much better use.
I would also want Smith to stay, needs to keep developing and become more consistent but there is definitely something there

Once again you are misquoting my opinion I have never said we should keep Oliver what I have said was and it’s a fact at the time we signed him he had a very good record for the previous two years in the league above

 

Not really relevant 2 years further down the line though is it, yet you keep banging on about it.

 

Max Shepherd?

 

Very odd career path so far for Shepherd. He floated around the amateur scene around Yorkshire until he was 22 then signs for Barnsley, straight into the first team setup. Although he was a kitchen fitter whilst he was an amatuer, he didn't work at the Co-op......

Last season was his first season of professional football, had 25 appearances in call comps with Barnsley and Cheltenham on loan, 18 of those were starts. He's seen 10 wins from his 18 starts. His one career red card so far.... was against Bradford City in last seasons EFL trophy game. It looks like at both clubs, he played in a back 3 but his first 3 starts at Barnsley, he was on the left of the 3. After that he was moved to play the middle role in the back 3 and played there ever since for Barnsley and Cheltenham, baring the odd left appearance for Cheltenham. Guessing due to his inexperience? Move him to the middle and it's easier to read the game?

Looks like he started in the team at Cheltenham then faded out the side, starting just 4 more times from the start of March. Maybe L1 your first season in pro football was a little too much of a reach? He's still very raw it seems from his brief clips online.

 

In other words, another underwhelming defensive signing?

 

Not misquoting, you stated the way GA now wants to play Oliver would be a good squad member - that is a comment for the present, nothing to do with when we signed him.
I just think we could do so much more with his ample pay if we could somehow move him on (sadly i accept that isn't easy)

 

He had a nightmare against us last season apparently in that EFL Trophy game, and ended up getting sent off.

Ended the season playing for Cheltenham, so no idea whether he will be good enough.

 

Possibly? Probably? It's hard to tell with someone really inexperienced. Reading on the Barnsley forum, they would rather keep him around or loan him to L1. One poster even said "I'm not sure loaning him to an average L2 side is a good idea". General opinion amongst their fans is that there's a physical defender in there with all the tools, just not a lot of training.

Against us last season, never handles his man for the set piece for the first, goes completely out of shape for the second, Christ knows what he was doing with Smith for the 3rd.

To be fair, their whole defense looks terrible.
