He hasn't been that bad. I can see why Hughes likes him. He receives the ball and turns forward and looks to pass the ball forward to Pattison, Walker, Wilson, Cook, which is good and what is needed in contrast to Smallwoods passing backwards. The main challenge is that he lacks the positional awareness that a usual centre midfielder has so is often in the wrong position.
