Best and worst away days you've done

    With the season coming round again I've been thinking back over the away trips I've done and how differently they can go.

    Everyone's got the one that was a slog. Six hours on a coach, tenner for a pie and a pint you wouldn't wash your car with, then we lose to a scrappy goal in the 89th. And everyone's also got the one that just worked. Decent town, decent boozer, good away end and a result to go with it.

    So which grounds are actually worth the trip and which ones would you avoid if you had the choice? More interested in the practical stuff than the football, where to park, where's a decent pint beforehand, whether the away end is any good. Handy for anyone planning their first few this season.

    There's already a few decent websites listing away grounds with the information you're seeking and some of them are really detailed.

    I don't think there is any positive of a trip to Luton Town. The ground is a dump, we always lose, and the surrounding area is a ghetto.

    On the flip side if you like a beer there are no better away days than those at York City. Cheap easy frequent trains to and from area, and you can barely go 100 yards without passing another pub.

    If you’re planning to go to Notts County, better go by car. Two years ago we had the train journey from Hell. Hundreds of us packed like sardines - standing room only - in a two carriage train all the way from Leeds to Nottingham. Train was delayed in a station half way down because it was overcrowded. Our carriage was filled with of coked and boozed up yoof being loud and obnoxious. Never again.
    And City conceded three horrendous goals in five first half minutes to really put the tin lid on a nightmare away day.

    Yeovil away in the FA Cup. Very early start. Dreadful performance.
    Always enjoyed going to Burton. Shipley Bantams did a trip to the England set up at St George's which was a brilliant addition to the trip.

    That Leeds to Nottingham service can be grim at the best of times, never mind when half of Bradford has decided to pile onto two carriages. The “overcrowded so we’ll sit here getting even later” logic is peak rail travel too. Notts is one I don’t mind as a city, plenty around the station and the ground is walkable enough, but I agree the train can turn it from a decent day into a hostage situation. Car or a booked coach feels the safer shout, especially if there’s any chance of a big away following. And yes, conceding three before you’ve properly found your seat does tend to sour the ale.

    I remember delaying a trip to see my girlfriend at Uni by a day so I could go to a Friday night game against Northampton. The coach got a bit lost on the way, it was pissing it down with rain and I ended up stood right behind the goal where the crossbar blocked the view of the goal at the other end of the pitch. Not that it mattered as the game was terrible and it ended 0-0. Didn't get back home until nearly 2am and was up at 7am to get an early train up to Lancaster for that delayed visit,
