Sharpe said it unless he’s wrong and a couple on here have been following his career closer than our recruitment team.

Same problem we had last season. Pattison wasn't the long term solution but that's the sort player, albeit a level higher, that we need this season. I guess Cartwright is that player but it's hard to find any coverage of him to prove this is what he does.

Talking of Pattison. Walsall fear he may be out for a while after getting injured in a friendly on Saturday. Really has bad luck that lad.

Well, he has to look at Metcalfe for an example - started on the bench and took his sub appearances well and forced his way in.

Bit similar with Pointon, he wasn't GA's first choice but forced his way in with appearances.

Could have turned out differently for Wheatley if he'd taken one or two of his chances.

Let's hope Harry can take his when it comes.

He played deep at Falkirk so he's not a box to box player. Their manager brought his favourite back in when he got fit so Cartwright then had to try further up the pitch and he scored a blinder against Rangers but wasnt consistent so ended up on the bench a bit with a two other CMs ahead of him.

The problem Ibbitson has is that it's hard to see where he gets that chance and when he does he can't afford inconsistent performances like Metcalfe and Pointon had. Both of them had time, Metcalfe had shown he could play at league 2 and had a 3 year contract, Pointon was only 18 so had time ahead of him whereas Ibbitson is 20, turning 21 this season so one way or another he needs games or his professional career is in big trouble. Metcalfe was brought in as 3rd/4th choice CM so was always going to get chances off the bench in the league and starting some cup games, Pointon was always either on the bench and just outside it then his real changing moment was after the dreadful Harrogate game where I think he was brought in as a chance to what he could do as the season looked over. With Ibbitson it looks like he's probably 6th choice for a position where there is only 1 spot so other than a lot of injuries or a lot of very poor performances from those ahead of him I don't see how he gets himself into a position to get a chance, there's not even any U21 football where he can score a few to get noticed.

Morsy has clearly priced himself out of a move earlier this summer and is now having to resort to this.

Its time for some on there such as Connor Wickham to retire

I'll be astounded if Ibbitson makes it. He has had two loan spells where by the end of his time at both Kidderminster and Chorley he found game time hard to come by. We are in League One now so he will need to really step up to break through.

Last year there was a player by the name of Danny Ormerod in the same league as Ibbitson who played a key role in his teams season and scored thirty goals. He is the same age as Ibbitson so it will be interesting to see how he gets on when he is inevitably picked up by a league two club.

Pointon didn’t exactly pull up any trees during his loans either , sure he wasn’t getting a game for brighouse

He did very well at Brighouse getting 3 goals in 4 games which got him a move to Farsley the level up where he struggled, that got terminated early and he dropped back down to NPL where he joined Liversedge and did well there despite the team finishing 2nd bottom

The lack of any reserve team football , really hampers the progress of young players at the lower levels
Clubs sign young loans from the premier league and championship, meaning they have to drop to non league teams to get a game, where I believe their development is limited if at all
I would rather we had Ibbitson in the squad last year than Wheatley, who provided nothing

Ben Osborn going back to Stockport is a cracking signing for them.

Won't get any better than that in league one.

I can't see the lack of reserve competitions changing any time soon, with the various FFP rules it's not viable for most clubs to run a reserve side that would be a good enough quality to justify it added to the issue of a lack of games with the central league last season having only 9 teams and it it national so added costs of travel. If we did get an U21 side then we would be able to enter the Premier League cup which would guarantee 6 games against good opposition.
I do wonder if one option would be to speak to the West Riding FA and see if there is an opportunity to add the u19 side into the West Riding Cup that way they would have a chance to showcase themselves to local non-league clubs and maybe get some loans.
