More like we need more bite in midfield

 

I think we certainly need another striker.There seems to be an assumption that by signing Beesley we have solved all our goalscoring problems,but I just dont see it.He may be what we need to lead the line,but on his own I can't see him scoring enough make a difference.

 

GA said in the t&a earlier this week that Phillips wont be used in the 2 deeper midfield roles and in our system he will be in one of the two 10 positions.

We are missing at least one deeper midfielder for me. Something really feels off about this Connolly DM plan.

 

We have brought 6 players in, but at least 9 from the match day available have left
Should be room for more incoming and Sharp suggested that

 

We are definitely crying out for 3 bare minimum to come in but I would say probably 4/5 are needed.

Another defender
At least one CM preferably two
RWB competition for Neufville
And a forward.

Then we could be contenders again

 

I tried to start a discussion about this in a formations thread but no one seemed interested. If Phillips plays as an attacking midfielder on the right then where does Jackson or Sarcevic play?

 

Humphrys missed training recently with a knock and his wife due to give birth, so cannot see him going to Austria

Wright definitely misses Austria due to an eye injury

Baldwin resumed training on Thursday

Phillips missed training last week with ankle injury suffered at Halifax

Trialists and 4 scholars going to Austria to make up the numbers.

We really need to ramp up recruitment in next couple of weeks as squad looks short on numbers to cover injuries and extra quality in midfield

 

That's my thinking too, but Jackson was pretty ineffective up front and it seems a bit extravagant to leave one of him or Phillips out. I just can't see how they can play together though unless Jackson plays in a two with Beesley which would need a different formation.

When do they go to Austria ?

 

Totally agree I would have rather had Alfie May or Ashley Fletcher. What I find equally worrying is that Ibbitson has suddenly come into focus. He has just come off of two loan spells where he struggled to get game time in conference north teams.

Compare that to Danny Ormerod who is the same age and played at the same level and played consistently scoring 30 goals.

I suspect we will be scraping around for goals again in January

 

The 4 trialists last night were Heneghan, Welch, James and some were saying the 4th was full back Aaron Lewis who has just been released by Mansfield, although no confirmation from Simon Parker in match report. Presume Davies left now.

No confirmation of which trialists flying out to Austria tomorrow though.

But where does this striker play unless we switch to a front two as we play with a front 3 in essence and already have a multitude of options on the right and left side. For this system to work, they need to score their fair share plus Phillips has been brought in to add to that total.

We're short of a quality midfielder. Someone who is high end league one/bottom of the championship. And I'd still be saying that if Power was here. Someone who is comfortable on the ball and can pass. Perhaps Metcalfe could have stepped up to that role this season but we definitely need that person now and it will probably need a transfer fee.

 

I said before he signed that he's the type of player that will probably do OK for us but isn't good enough to take us to the next level and I want nothing more than to be proved wrong about that.
As for Ibbo, I really don't understand the calls from quite a lot of people for him to be given a chance this season. Based on what? As you say, he certainly didn't set the world on fire in the Conference North and it's a hell of a step up from that to League 1.

 

Which isn’t a bad return really considering the position Burton were in. Only one player got over 20 league goals last season in league one and he looks as if he’s going to get a £5mill transfer to the Championship at some point.
Looking at all the strikers above Beesley in the scoring charts there isn’t a realistic one we could have signed. Maybe the lad at Stevenage but he’s 32 and had a pretty average career. We don’t have the resources to bring in a Tolaj, Wootton, Fletcher or Taylor.
I really don’t think you can make any assumptions from the couple of friendlies we’ve played on if it’s a good signing or not.
