A lot can change with 4 groups still to play their 2nd game and the final round of fixtures still to take place but as things stand our quarter of the draw is brutal. Portugal currently qualifying as a best 3rd to play us so that is likely to change although judging by how badly they played against Congo finishing top 2 is far from guaranteed. Mexico are the only team locked in with Brazil, Japan, Ivory Coast and us very likely to join them over the next few days.

With Portugal winning and France going top last night the quarter looks more favourable than it was yesterday. Hopefully Colombia beat DR Congo tonight then DR Congo beat Uzbekistan on the last day then it would be a kind round of 32 match.

Madueke and Gordon were both hopelessly ineffective. They should have switched wings as soon as it became obvious that Ghana were going to make it attack v defence with ten men behind the ball.
Having two inverted wingers who always want to cut inside onto their stronger foot is stupid against a packed defence. All they ever did was pass backwards or run into traffic. Our best chance was for them to take on their fullback, get to the byeline and put crosses into the box, thereby bypassing their low block; but that didn’t happen until near the end when, surprise surprise, we started creating chances.
Baffling that Tuchel didn’t recognise that and make the change much earlier.
Even more baffling, with it known in advance that Saka was carrying an injury and wouldn’t be able to play full games, that he left Bowen - who is comfortable going inside or out and frequently sets up chances from the byeline with his weaker foot - at home.
