I read a number of debates last season about who should or shouldn’t be starting in defence. I genuinely think you could choose any combination out of Wright, Pennington, Tilt, Baldwin and Touray and it wouldn’t make any difference whatsoever. They are all solid 6.5/10 defenders, who might not necessarily be the most talented but are generally dependable and rarely let us down.

Wouldn’t say no to an elite level CB if we can find one but I don’t think it’s an area of the pitch where wholesale changes are needed.

 

The problem was our midfielders were having to sit deep to protect the back 3 and that prevented them from going forward and create something .

You could look at that both ways. Yes GA does tend to be a bit risk averse. That could be because as you say e doesn’t trust the defence or alternatively it could be because he doesn’t believe our forwards will score enough

 

Nonsense. They were signed as sitting midfielders irrespective of who played behind them.

 

I don't think he can sign till July 1st.Not sure how the insurance would work if he got injured before then.

 

They've paid a fee for him and he has left the club so he isn't our player any more.

 

Transfer window opened last monday, he left when that opened.

The July 1st thing is just for free agents when their old contracts end June 30th.

 

The bigger problem was that Power often ended up behind the back line and had lots of possession on the edge of our box. That's not great however you want to spin in.

We definitely need that midfield line playing further forward this year but how we achieve that I'm not sure.
