Play off receipts are shared within the division. If we paid a player twice as much as any other player, might that effect morale?

Not sure what you wanted him to say. Yes the signings were poor but if he comes out and says that, do you honestly think clubs will be lining up to loan us their better players when they know our manager has a history of slagging them off?

He certainly is a failed improver as far as Newcastle are concerned . He will end up going for free?

I don't know what Newcastle will do with Ashby, their fans appear to have thought he was out of contract and he'd have been a certain release.

I can't imagine they're making any sort of plans for his future at this point, just playing out his contract. They might still refuse to loan him to us after getting so little game time, but I wouldn't say it's out of the question, what does it really matter to Newcastle United at this point?

I imagine they're resigned to the fact nobody is picking up the tab for his wages, so they're stuck with him for a year, might as well get a fraction of that back IMO. Better spending that year out on loan, but who knows.

A rare instance where he's probably too expensive to even be a free transfer at this point given the lad himself will want to collect his full wage packet for one last year.

Think this guy would be a good signing. Unfortunately so do a lot of teams

No chance he comes back. He was a crock before anything else.

I saw the York owner who is very open on social media about the dealings of the club, he said they have a number of people signed but they need to wait for them to get back off holiday to do the shoots etc and announce them.

Hopefully we are in a similar position with the handful of people GA had meetings with a week or so ago and we start seeing some new faces this week or next. I guess that a lot of clubs will be going back to training in 2 weeks? Maybe 3 for play off clubs?

Correct. Seen alot of cry babies on social media moaning as we havent 'replaced' Power and let him leave. They still can't comprehend that signing a player and announcing a player are 2 completely different things.

GA has already confirmed that we aren't after any of the loans so assuming there isn't any smoke and mirrors then yeah, clearly he won't be back here any time soon.

I'm not massively bothered about losing Power. He did well for us 90% of the time. But i actually think we can do better in that position. The part that will be harder will be his leadership, that bit was excellent and will be hard to replicate. But doesn't mean it can't be done.

I have no ill will towards Max. He obviously put 100% in every time he put on the shirt, and I get the feeling he loves us. But not as much as he loves Wigan. Which is fair enough....

Interested to see who we get in now.

Maybe Callum Connolly is one of them as seen a few comments on the socials saying he’s signed but you never know.

This will be the really quiet time in the close season. Players are away on holiday as will probably Alexander, things will hot up in about two weeks time.

Apparently MK Dons are looking at a deal to bring Joe White in. He had a really impressive load spell there the other season, but a year of not playing at his age could be a nightmare to recover from. He probably needs L2 again. Ashby was a weird one, i thought he had the odd moment but looked really hit and miss. But his injury record looks a bit poor as well for a lad his age. He probably did have a load of talent at one stage as a teen, but when you spend the first 2 or 3 years of your 20s barely playing, it's going to be tough to get into rhythm.

It's a shame when these PL clubs offer these long deals to players in their teens who obviously are going to sign them, but if they don't kick on you suddenly have lads who are 23-25 with maybe 50/60 games on their CV, going into the EFL to find their next home with probably stupidly high ideas of money as they'll have been earning a L1 wage since they were 18 and get a shock to the system. I wonder if something could be introduced with these contracts teenagers sign? Like a 22 rule or something? Rather than clubs signing up an 18 year old for 5/6 years who might not even make it, have a 21 or 22 year old clause where if the lad is miles off or still on loan to L2 at 22 years old from a PL team and it's obvious they don't make it, that one side can walk away from the deal in the next window? Would mean that clubs can offer the stability but if the players progress doesn't kick on, they aren't tied to that money for 1/2/3 years more than they want to. And same for the young lad, he knows that he cant sit on his development just because he has a PL contract, he has to earn it every day and achieve the levels the clubs think they can and if he doesn't, he can find a newer club at 21 to get gametime rather than 24.

No. Not unless I read it wrong.

It reads as if Newcastle paid a big fee so there's no chance of him coming here either on loan or a permenant yet he's actually already been here so that's clearly nonsense.

Maybe this is food for though?

Here's how it worked when I joined the Royal Navy in 1974 (when ships were made of wood and men of iron), and maybe something like this might work for very young players. At 16 I joined and the contract was that from 16 to 17 1/2 I was a Junior Rating and could leave, almost, at any time. At 18 the contract stipulated that I would then serve for 9 years and would be paid accordingly. However I had the option to change that to a 3 year engagement at a lower pay rate. There was a further clause that allowed, at 18 + 3 (so when I was 21) to change the contract and leave the RN with 18 months notice (which I did). Essentially this ensured, to some degree, that young people did not get locked into very long contracts. Not exactly fit for purpose for the world of Football but clearly something along these lines might work for young players.
