Moxon is already the type of player we have in Power and Metcalfe. And as industrious as they are, they aren't the creative type of player that we seem to come up against every week, threading through balls to forwards, stepping over and around our full backs and generally adding a bit of spark and flair in the midfield. When was the last time we had a "bums off seats" performance from any of our players? Probably the day we beat the dogs 3-1 with Bobby and Josh skinning players. I don't know what's happened. Have we lost our swagger due to our league position? I think we have. We need someone coming into the team that will lift the players and scare the oppo - not just another workmanlike water carrier playing safe sideways passes.

Southampton's back to back was League 1, Championship and into the Premier League, that was 15 years ago where the gaps were so much smaller than they were and there only a few years after being in the Premier League so they were more than ready to do well in the Championship. They also have the benefit of having academy players like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana in the squad.

Luton 18/19 are closer to what we are today and they didn't spend loads but a bit part of what they did was having a league 2 squad that could cope with top end league 1. This is all the transfer business they did in league 1 and it wasn't a lot especially in January where most of the signings were loans and none of them went on to be regular starters, they were only back ups.

 

How do we judge that Kev? We're joint third right now, this woh a squad that apparently isn't good enough (to be fair I don't think it is)

 

Would it be good enough with 2 or 3 quality additions this next week do you think?

If they have been targeted to play a specific role within Alexander's formation and are of better quality than we currently have then yes. 'Quality' being the key word.

 

Sounds like Scott Banks is on his way to Barnsley.

 

Worries me slightly, that GA or indeed Sparks and our recruitment team, haven't really made any noises about moving in the transfer window. I know the days are gone when Sparks was all over the internet using it as a PR mouthpiece, but I'd still like to hear a bit of appeasement to stem the building chatter of unrest with regards to squad depth/quality. Or is it going to be one of these keeping cards closed to ones chest type scenarios, and then nobody comes in on deadline day other than the young lad from Man Utd. Blimey, can't imagine that situation - especially if we don't score on Tuesday.

 

We judge it by its success or failure surely ?

Promoted, good enough, fail to go up by whatever means is a “ fail” , if results are the benchmark?
Currently I agree, there is lots of scope for improvement .

 

Remember a few years ago we were linked to Ryan Edmondson a lot? Striker who was in the Leeds academy, had a few L2 loans. Target man who has a pretty rough reputation at his former clubs for being a donkey in front of goal. We were linked to him in 21/22 and he went to Vale instead on loan, then we were linked the season after and he went to Carlisle.

He's been released by his Aussie club and reportedly is on his way back to England..... 2 goals from 50 L1 appearances so far in his career, but he's a free! Gents getting that iPad back out!

When we consider ONE player being purchased by Liverpool costs more than the entire squads of L1 added together then we have a problem?

The greed at the top and complete waste of money chasing the dream, is and has filtered down the leagues and not for the better of the game
Football is distorted by money clubs like Bournemouth and Brentford flourishing in the premier league on crowds below many with match day income that would probably pay for our squad
I hate it if I am honest unfortunately the authorities do not have the clout to deal with it

The other quandary is, why didn't we put bids in for strikers at the start of January or have a plan for when we let Cook go? I've an awful feeling that we've left it too late in the window, where we look desperate, teams won't have enough time to replace a good striker and we get quoted ridiculous transfer fees that we won't pay.

 

So then the question becomes if we haven't targeted those players, then why? We are currently joint 3rd in the table having being around there all season with at least one game in hand on all of those around us. If not now, when?

Parkers interview with.Alexander in today's T&A,is a bit worrying It seems to me as they have nobody lined up,and are only worried because of the injuries to Sarce and Swan..Alexander saying.He does not want to be left with players who do not fit his system at the end of the season,so why not look at loan players,then that problem does not arise.
