What really worries me isn’t that we lose — it’s how we lose. Every time we’re beaten, we somehow manage to look completely out of our depth at this level, like a very below-average League TWO side rather than a team competing near the top of League 1.

We’ve now lost 6 games this season in the League, and in almost all of them we’ve been absolutely horrendous and played off the park. In those defeats we’ve struggled to string two passes together, barely registered a shot on target, and looked miles away from being competitive.

The only defeat where we actually showed some fight was against Cardiff. The rest leave you wondering how we're in the top half.

That’s why it’s so hard to get your head around how we can an be sitting 3rd/4th one week and then turning in performances like that the next. It also explains why this forum goes into meltdown whenever we lose — it’s the manner of the defeats. We don’t just lose games; we look awful doing it, like the players just can’t be bothered.

That said, to have lost only 6 league games so far this season is a good return, and the season is far from over. But we need to rediscover our mojo quickly. The next two games are massive — if we’re serious about being playoff contenders, they have to be wins. Anything less than six points, and we’re looking more like mid-table than promotion material.

It shows what a crap league it is and there is a deffo chance to get out of it ............folk can alude to building for a real shot at it 2 or 3 seasons down the line but will it still be that poor ????

I would have ripped your hand off at staying in the league at the start of the season but has it gone on i really think its weak and with a decent window we may have pushed on but its not looking good at all,and thats the disapointing bit ................i honestly feel that the next 3 games will say where will finish and i have a feeling after the Luton game whenmay just be hanging on to the 6th place

And after each one we've come back with a good performance and a string of decent results.

Thats whats worrying they couldnt get up for a derby and Lincoln will be a lot tougher with the carrot of really putting a big gap between us

Aye I should've said I recognise that we lost against Cardiff but the performance wasn't bad. We came close to holding the likely runaway leaders so I'm disregarding that one and more referring to our bad performances. I appreciate that may look like I'm 'moving the goalposts'

Listening to GA yesterday he referred to us having to compete with clubs who spend 1m on a player and joked we could rob a bank.
Well newsflash GA and Rupp, we’d be better off staying in this league rather than try to get promoted if we are not willing to spend not just 1m but several millions just to stay in the Championship.
If not willing to pay big transfer fees then the norm will be 20k per week wages.
So whilst we all want to go up, what’s the point

If the unthinkable happened and by some miracle we were promoted, but came straight back down, wouldn’t it be worth it ? Surely we come down in a much better state than what we are in now?

Yes I get your point that we obviously wouldn’t decline the opportunity of promotion.
It’s just the way GA seemed to be bemoaning the fact that other clubs are spending millions.
Of course everyone wants to go up but it won’t be much fun enduring a Championship season if the owner has no intention or financial means to fund it or at least try.
Let’s see how much the club are willing to push the boat out in the next week to bring a marque striker in.

As you say, to have only lost 6 games so far is a good return, but the worry for me is that 50% of those loses have come from our last 4 games.

This is the biggest test of how we react to a piss poor performance

    The last one was Mansfield.
Fortunately we followed that with a win against an ordinary Blackpool.

Tuesday is very different against a flying Lincoln in clear 2nd.

Not sure what changes between yesterday and Tuesday but perform like Saturday and serious questions need to be asked.

We have lost the last two very difficult games and there is no disgrace there. However I think the tactics we have employed which have given us our success over the last twelve months have been countered and we need a rethink. If we can’t employ our press we need an extra midfielder. It will take a lot to get GA to change tack but I hope he has nous to do that

With Sarce and Swan apparently still out, not much he can change upfront. Got to get it right from the start, i think i mentioned to you i'm sick of seeing changes being made at half time cos we've performed poorly in the first 45.

I dont think he will name the same starting line up but my big worry is that he reacts to yesterdays horror show by bringing back Byrne and Kelly at the back.
Really hoping not and he gets the right reaction as if we get back to anything like how we can play, then a good result is more than achievable.

If I see either of Byrne or Kelly in the starting lineup an hour before kick off I’m going home.

I am hoping Pennington is in the team, especially given Baldwin seemed to pick up an injury on Saturday.

Whatever personnel Alexander picks, we absolutely have to stop constantly hoofing the ball aimlessly upfield. In yesterday’s game, we’d repeatedly given possession back to Town, and then we eventually managed to string four or five passes together. We moved briefly as a unit upfield, and just for a moment, the entire dynamic of the game shifted in our favour. The move predictably broke down, but it showed that getting the ball on the ground and stringing a few simple passes together gave us a bit of confidence and was considerably more effective than just lumping it aimlessly forwards to their defenders.

Agree with this. For all the talk of needing a striker, at the moment I don’t think it matters who we have up front given the dreadful quality of our approach play. It’s either lump it up aimlessly or spend forever passing it between wing back and wide man to then cross a ball in for one striker to battle for (on the rare occasion the ball into the box is any good).

It’s been a problem for a while now, there seems to be no plan in place for how to build up pressure in the final third, or work the ball into the box.

I think that ‘anything less than six points’ in the next two games is an exceptionally high bar!

Lincoln away, when they are settled in second place is a very tough call. They have also had a couple of days extra to rest/recover/plan.

If we can get four points, and replicated that ratio over our fixtures until the end of the season, we would amass 86 points, be virtually assured a Play Off place and potentially an automatic place.

Beating Doncaster (and well) is arguably more achievable. In fact we really need to end the poor run we have had against them.
