FA Cup Upsets

Nah, I think National League North's 14th best team beating the current FA Cup holders is the rightful winner!

Doesn't take anything away from our win over Chelsea which was absolutely phenomenal and probably top 5 of all time.

 

Notice all the other shocks had the team who caused them at home ...........apart from ours

 

IMHO that summary of the Chelsea game underplays our achievement pretty badly. It fails to point out that Chelsea won the PL title and League Cup that season, that no other team won at Stamford Bridge that season (including several Champions League teams) and that every one of their players (including their star studded subs bench) was a full international. The gulf in class was massive. To score four unanswered goals, from two down, against the likes of Salah, Willian, Hazard and Fabregas, was unprecedented.

 

Will do and im voting Macclesfield. 6th tier vs PL opposition and not only that - the holders. Biggest shock of all time FA Cup.

 

May be bias John but for me, Macc being at home on that artificial pitch and the Palace line up has to be taken into consideration so for me it's definitely still City winning at Chelsea.

I agree - it was a weak highly demotivated palace team - Mac at home in front of their own supporters - on a plastic pitch in freezing conditions. They went IN FRONT and had something to hold onto. City away against a squad of full internationals seeking a quadruple, and 2 down just before half time. Recency bias suggests Macc will get the popular vote - the facts say City’s win at Stamford bridge

 

City’s win at Chelsea was an amazing and a deserved achievement. But I watch Scarborough from time to time in the same league the standard is low and to beat a premiership team even with the advantage of the pitch I think is probably a bigger shock

 

Agreed, they were comfortably the best team in the country at the time and IMO a top 3 in the world team (alongside Real Madrid and Barca)
It was the only time in Mourinhos career that he has both lost from being 2 goals up and conceded 4 at home. I don't think that stat gets enough credit.

That's not to downplay to Macc's achievement at all. We were a league 1 team then and they are an average team 3 divisions further down and are definitely in the conversation. Was a huge achievement for them yesterday!

And yes I / we are biased, but I'm sticking with our win as the best ever!

 

Just look at what happened to Exeter at Man City yesterday and compare with us v Chelsea.

 

I think if we also look through the 10 games selected, we're the only team that won away from home which is a huge factor and absolutely needs to be taken into consideration.

 

1. Us at Chelsea
2. Hereford v Newcastle
3. Sunderland v Leeds

Ours is easily the best, Chelsea still put out a cracking team. Gone with Hereford as 2nd simply because there was no such thing as rotation in those days. You drew Newcastle at home, you got a strong Newcastle team, not a bunch of reserves. 3rd is obvious.

 

Very difficult for any Bradford City who was there to witness that performance not to be bias, but as several have quoted above we were away to one of the biggest clubs in the world who had a great record at Stamford Bridge, after going 2 - 0 down we still gave their defence problems Davies header bringing a world class save out of Petr Cech and then that great strike just before halftime that Petr Cech got to hand to but couldn't keep the shot out as Stead hit it so well.
Going in at half time 2 -1 down gave us that belief in ourselves and second half we more than matched Chelsea scoring 3 well worked goals which the likes of Real Madrid or Barcelona would have been proud to have scored, I believe on the night it was Robbie Fowler on MOTD who actually said that was the greatest giant killing act in the history of the FA Cup and who are we to disagree, we've had a few highs (and lows) over the years but that game has to be right up there with the best, although my grandson still says that night at Villa Park eclipse it ?

I still watch it from time to time if I want a ‘pick-me-up’ … and I see myself on the old ‘telly-box’

 

The only game that beats it for me was winning at Wolves

 

That was a great occasion especially as it was at Wolves and they we were still in the mix for a play off place and possibly promotion, but they were a team from the same division, we all see/feel differently about those great occasions, let's hope we can continue our momentum so far and have a shout in the promotion mix.

 

Top 5 games in terms of emotion and joy for me would be very difficult to rank but probably something like this;

Wolves away
Blackpool away
Chelsea away
Villa away
Fleetwood home

 

Interesting take on this on the Radio this morning - Barnsley are 12/1 at Liverpool tonight but Macclesfield were only 10/1 on Saturday, therefore, the bookies consider Barnsley a bigger shock. I didn’t bet, but I believe we were 28/1 at Chelsea? If all match considerations e.g. home/away , teams, relative form etc… are considered, I don’t think City’s win that day is given enough credit (from outside our fan base) when these cup debates are had.
