they are the same thing. we should be signing players to get us out of this league. If they do then they are clearly good enough for league one

Even if we kept the same group after promotion but finished bottom again?

What are you expecting out of interest? Also how much do you know of the signings we have made so far?

As much as some seem set on writing off new signings before they’ve stepped on the training pitch, I’m interested to understand how much they know about them to make these calls?

    I agree.

The idea you need a top class team to get out of L2 isn't the case at all.

The quality of signings won't stop us going up. They're fine.

It's the hangover from last year, and the poor players with poor attitudes and no bottle that will stop us.

    Agree.
This is the strangest pre season I have ever known - feeling more excited about the prospect of certain players leaving than of who we might sign. It's the most bizarre feeling.

Four good signings and I think we will do well left back. Centre half Paudie would be good centre midfield and centre forward a good spine and we will be fine

If we stopped signing players now the squad would be lacking any real quality or what you would deem quality. You don’t need to view players over a full season to make those Calls. That’s why for me it’s uninspiring so far.

We’ve had a long time to know we would need a certain amount of players, I hope we have a few more lined up.

A lot of relegated sides usually take the pick if the best players form other clubs who were maybe up there last season to strengthen and then challenge. Sunderland took Wyke off of us. Ipswich have signed Norwood. For example.

We look to be filling squad gaps so we have more balance compared to last season.

What i am saying is that i think if you finish top of division 2 then you have a team which is better than a fair few teams at the bottom of division 1. There's not many teams which get promoted then relegated the next season div 2 to div 1, unlike other divsiions where the divide is a lot bigger

If we won the league then I'd maybe agree. Not sure that would be the same if we limped over the line in the play offs.

Explain where you get “an average league one winger” from and I will try to answer this.

What makes you think Wright will go to Orient? He was going to sign for Edinburgh but his passing will have surely ended that deal. The new boss, when appointed, may have his own thoughts about Wright.

As for Riley, can anyone afford to take someone who has been poor since his release from Man Utd u23s?

Finally, we still only have 3 centre-backs at the club, including O’Connor. What makes you think he’ll leave? And even if he does, we would still needs 2 to come in for that position.

I started by saying that someone quoted the average L2 player is on £1.5k a week. Obviously it’s guess work, just as it is from you to rubbish the figures. In reality, nobody knows, but it doesn’t stop us making an educated guess based on what folk have said.

No, it was me who gave the average wage for a L2 player - it’s circa £1700.00 p/w.

So, you then assumed the average player within the squad earned the average weekly wage.

I highly doubt that any of our signings thus far are on anywhere near £1700.00 per week - apart from perhaps Ismail.

    Pure guess work.

ie we’ve signed shite for many years. Last year wasn’t unique and I identified Payne as he was the biggest spend of the underachievers. Agree he performed well until Christmas. But was pants afterwards. Although for consistency several others were much worse all season. NKP. chicksen. Wright. Akpan. Doyle. O donnell.

Least likely to leave has to be Riley.

Unless he's willing to accept a pay cut to play football, which doesn't appear to be the case based on Hopkin's comments earlier in the season.

Genuinely think this guy's league career is finished, so he's just going to sit on his pay check.

Not heard any rumblings to suggest anything else.

I've got a fence post at work going spare. I'll rent the club that for just 1/3rd of what O'Connor is on.

Agree to a certain extent. Last seasons failures don’t exactly fill one with confidence that we have the quality we need. That said I would argue that even amongst the tripe we had to deal with, there is quality amongst them. How the manager ‘manages’ and sets them up can make a significant difference.

My question was however, what insights do we as supports really have to make a call that these four new signings so far lack real quality? French aside, they’re all relatively young but with a fair amount of football league experience/exposure. Who’s to know they aren’t able to become solid first teamer’s this season, under the right management and direction?

Of course I don’t doubt they could become a good team. The manager is key at this level. Parky signed a lot of journeymen but he set them up well and we were very tough to beat and we had a lot of success.

We can only go on our judgement as fans and that is what this forum is for. Got to remember last year we signed name after name and we were a crap side.

I do think we will do well under Bowyer but you cannot blame people for claiming it’s a lack of quality so far. With what we have left from last season, let’s hope we do a MK Dons, using last years shite to get promoted.
