You was quick enough to back Sam Hornby, a 4th division reserve keeper based on the comments of Port Vale fans.

No harm in seeing what other fans say. What would you say if Walsall signed Joe Riley or NKP? You'd piss yourself and say how crap they were. This is no different.

 

Neither has Messi, but despite only being about 4ft 10 he’d probably be ok.

 

Of course according to other fans we have bought three good players and one poor one the point remains the same we can only judge when the squad is completed and we see how individuals fit into the squad.

 

Not only has the player something to prove but it’s GB reputation on the line here. We have had enough of players who don’t turn up, he is not getting any younger, and if he doesn’t show graft, skill and determination to succeed this season non league awaits his talents. Previous fans are a reasonable barometer of a player.

 

I spoke to a group of Burton fans when we played them last season who all agreed we had signed a good player in Hope Akpan. If he was to move tomorrow I wonder what our fans would say

 

A few weeks back I did make the warning that we will be fishing in the shit-pool again. Some mocked me for it and claimed that we could sign some good players with the £1m we had to spend.

So far we have signed up 5 players; Devine, Richards-Everton; French, Hornby and Ismail. Nothing yet to be excited about and around £350k of the budget already utilised on their wages.

I'm actually concerned by our signings.
Port Vales checkatrade goalkeeper, a player who couldn't get in Accringtons team, a Sunday league player and a player who has been relegated twice in two seasons which were followed by his release and a good riddance from the fans. We must do bettter. Far better.

 

For me, this represents better back up on the wings than we had last season.

I calculate that because we will have back up on the wings, unlike last season.

Regardless of what people think or expect from Ismail, it's clear Bowyer is aware (unlike Rahic) that a squad needs balance, not just names plucked out of a hat.

 

I agree with this but what baffles me is that if you read back at what Burton fans, Bury fans and Walsall fans say about Ismail then im not sure he is Bowyer type player. He sounds like a greedy show pony with no end product who rarely turns up. The complete opposite of the type of player I'd expect GB to go for. The only thing I can suggest is that he must be on peanuts.

 

Are you sure it's that bad?

We need a squad with depth, and we're never going to sign 22 first team quality players right away.

We started the 2012-13 season with Zavon Hines in the starting line up. Is Zeli Ismail really any worse?

We started 2012-13 with Luke Oliver. Now we've got Richards-Everton. Is he really that much worse?

We started 2012-13 with Carl McHugh as back up in defence, now we've got French. Is there a big difference?

We started 2012-13 with Will Atkinson in and around the first team, is Jermaine Anderson really much worse?

For me, the obvious thing Bowyer is adding is squad depth, an improved bench in terms of options, and the ability to play a formation other than some jingle bells christmas tree crap that Hopkin was stuck with.

However I agree that we need to strengthen the first XI, and we still have some way to go on that front.

Not all bad, not all good - but to be 'concerned' is a bit impatient.

Maybe being a bit unfair till we actually see them play but we are a team in the bottom tier of the football league
We should be looking at and securing players not only to get us out of this league but players who can stabilize us in L1 none of the signings so far have a past record to suguest they can do this
Am clinging to the hope they are "back up" players and the real starting eleven will be brought in once last seasons high earning wasters have gone otherwise another season of struggle beckons

 

If its as you say and those brought in so far (maybe with the exception of Richards Everton) are squad players then I'm content with that. If they are all going to be starters then I'm very concerned.

 

But surely we should be signing players that are actually better than the shower we have? Then your comparisons would be more like; Hines v Doyle
Oliver v A.O’Connor
McHugh v Wood
Atkinson v Akpan

because our 1st team players from last season are now on the bench and replaced by better in the 1st team?

I’ve no idea if he’s going to be any good, looks like a bit of a punt. We’ll find out soon enough.

 

No one actually mocked you! It’s all just a bit premature, don’t you think? We haven’t even reached the middle of June, so what makes you think we have finalised our transfer business for this particular window? If you acknowledge that we haven’t yet finalised our recruitment for this window, why the early, judgemental comments on players you most probably haven’t even seen play?

I’ve seen you quote the £350k figure a few times now, care to expand on how you have come to this figure? - genuinely intrigued.
