The second wave of Spanish Flu was aggravated by Asprin falling out of patent and the US Navy and Surgeon General recommending it for Spanish Flu treatment in autumn 2018. It led to a huge wave of production by other companies around the world and vastly increased consumption. It was promoted as helping alleviate the disease but it turns out it probably made it worse, particularly as people around the world took the new drug in excessive doses, sometimes as a preventative measure. Aspirin/salycilate above a certain dose accumulates in the body and severely aggravates its side effects. This means Aspirin may have aggravated Spanish Flu deaths or even caused some of the death surge itself. Spanish flu is, as far as I know, the only virus thought to have mutated to a more deadly version when the tendency is for viruses mutate weaker. When you look at what happened with Aspirin, it may well be that Spanish flu did not mutate more deadly at all. It is distinctly possible that the big expansion in Asprin/salycilate consumption at the start of the second wave is what aggravated its death toll.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/13/health/13aspirin.html

Asprin/salycilates were linked to excess flu deaths in children in the 1950s-1980s but they stopped when warnings were given and non-prescription childhood Aspirin use stopped.

Today’s paper is suggesting Leicester is going to be put back in Lockdown because of a spike of cases

If you say so. All about the economy now I fear. The spin doctors will play along with the data and manipulate to suit the economy.

Only thing they said this morning(Patel) is that testing will be increased in the area and more advice given to the local authorities.

It won't go into a full lockdown...You need to get your head around that it's the economy now that matters.

Of course the economy matters but so does many people dying so if it is getting out of control they will crack down locally at first and beyond if necessary

Don't disagree with what you are saying but as I said, it won't happen. Hey we see c80k deaths per year from smoking and we only get advisory information from our government and a bit of plain packaging to stop this evil. I fear similar advisory information from our government come a significant increase in the R rate in Leicester or beyond. But I'll be happy to be proven wrong.

If Leicester had a spike in cases in the first two weeks of June, it should have already seen a spike is hospitalisation and be starting a spike of deaths around now. Reports say they've only just got the figures to expose the spike but hospitals should have been reporting increased admissions a week or two ago. A few recent cases of "spikes in cases" have actually been spikes in testing, e.g Sweden. I wonder if Leicester increased testing.

If such a spike could be missed, what does that say about published R figures? If Leicester had a spike in early June and we had little herd immunity and we've unlocked further and had social spacing ignored even more in the warm weather, we would have a regional or even nationwide spike now - yet we do not. Same with the meat factory outbreak. It should have spread rapidly if there was no herd immunity. Where is the spike in hospital admissions?

Won't happen. If the government were serious then they would be saying people can't go into the city centre or stopping pubs opening next week.

It's obvious Boris's attention span has wandered away from cv19.Today he is banging on about infrastructure and housing,no doubt leaving the hapless Hancock to carry the coronavirus can.

Is that a bad thing to still be saying the present Tory party are not going back to austerity, they were voted in on manifesto promising Brexit doing and major infrastructure plan's, he could be saying unfortunatly due to Covid-19 we can't spend the sort of money we hoped too on building HS2, 5G etc.

hmmm is that going to get the economy back though?

How is he going to get the 17-25 year olds in employment and the 3-5 million people that are now on unemployed.

Hiding behind the Furlough but not coming with any economy plans as yet. These plans are urgently required.

It’s a tough problem the goverment is making the right noises with apprentice schemes and job guarantee schemes we will have to wait and see like the rest of the world. I am worried though that making it harder to trade with countries yoU do Most business with will be a good idea in these unprecedented times

it works both ways Park,EU sell a lot stuff to Britain, and they will want that to continue. It's just a shame that negotiations on our side are being done by the most inept government in living memory, and on the EU side by a Frenchman who clearly dislikes Britain. One can only hope.

Sky news just had Leicester’s mayor on, and he’s baffled as his understanding is that infection and fatality numbers have been on a downward trend for some time. He’s calling on government to share its data that would support any ‘lockdown’, as the city’s own figures appear to contradict whatever numbers government is relying on.

    More government incompetence incoming?

not sure how you lockdown Leicester. Is it just Leicester postcodes? And if so what if you live there but work elsewhere and vice versa? What about travel, would that be essential only?

That's probably one of the reasons why both Hancock and Patel seem to be caught in the headlights and don't know what to do!

Somebody suggested on the radio earlier that 'they' are still argiung about whether the Govt has any rights to enforce a localised lockdown. But as the PM has said only recently, he's fully in charge so I'd expect him to have a solution.

And if they don't have power maybe secondary legislation could be used
