Absolute genius, it just shows how looks can be deceptive.

A brass band band version of a Christmas No 1 would usually be a terrible proposition but...

    Some more great cover versions:

The Beatles - Twist & Shout.
One of the great Lennon vocal performances. It's going some to better the Isley Brothers.

The Beatles - Money. Another great Lennon vocal. Better than the Motown original by Barrett Strong.

The Byrds - Mr Tambourine Man. The record that invented folk rock. Knocks Dylan's original into a cocked hat. The 12 string intro riff is a work of genius.

The Animals - House of the Rising Son. The definitive version of a much older folk song.

Joe Cocker - With a Little Help from my Friends. The best Beatles cover version ever. Transformative.

Cream - Crossroads. The Robert Johnson original was a work of genius in its own right. The live version on Wheels of Fire takes it somewhere else entirely.

Aretha Franklin - Respect. As Otis Redding put it - 'That girl just stole my song'.

Aretha Franklin - Spanish Harlem. Ben E King's original is excellent. Aretha's is immense.

Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love. A blatant, uncredited reworking of the Willie Dixon/Muddy Waters song, You Need Love. It's majestic. The iconic riff is the self same notes as the standard blues riff from Hoochie Coochie Man, but with altered timing that transforms it into a total sledgehammer. Scandalous that they didn't credit Dixon for the lyrics though.

Led Zeppelin - When the Levee Breaks. Another uncredited cover, of Memphis Minnie's original. It's truly epic. The drums, harmonica and slide guitar sound utterly huge.

The Clash - Police & Thieves. It's not necessarily better than Junior Murvin's excellent original, just different and great in its own right.

The Clash - I Fought the Law. So much more powerful than the Bobby Fuller Four original.

    Anything from here ;):joy: :

Yes, those two Clash numbers are always good to hear. Same with the Byrds -- all their Dylan covers.

Stiff Little Fingers: Doesn't Make It Alright, Love of the Common People, Johnny Was, and Roots, Radicals, Rockers, and Reggae are all good treatments

The big problem with YouTube is that you watch one video of a band from @River_City_Bantam@River_City_Bantam and all of a sudden the algorithm thinks that you must really want to see more from that band...

What's really surprising is that they managed to land more than one gig!

Fuzzy you're a better man than I...or would that be worse, in this context? I hesitated to put up those other links myself, fearing a thread ban...:brig:

Red Hot Chili Peppers: Unlimited Love. They've never made a poor album with John Frusciante on guitar, until now. Very disappointing, there's a few songs later on that are OK but even if they lopped an hour out of the running time it'd still be uninspiring.

I really like the new Kae Tempest album The Line Is A Curve. Previously I've thought that they were at their best when pairing rabble rousing force of nature diatribes with a wall of noise and pummeling beats and some of the more introspective tracks haven't really done it for me but this whilst this album is certainly more laid back than Everybody Down there feels to be a lot more urgency than The Book Of Traps... and they seem to have found a fertile middle ground. Unlike the previous albums there doesn't seem to be an overarching narrative which makes it easier to dip in and out of and it feels like a collection of songs rather than a singular lyrical piece of work where individual tracks aren't as powerful when heard individually.

Some more rabbit holes to disappear into: Hamilton (Ontario) in the '80s...many good bands, three that stood out: Dave Rave & the Shakers, for 50s & 60s-style rock and roll, Frankie Venom and Teenage Head, for good old punk, and Mickey de Sadist and the Forgotten Rebels for satirical social and political commentary that gets misunderstood to this day. Alas. Good times pogoing to all of them.

The Rebels are still active; here's their second full lp:

The Smile - A light for attracting attention. The new Radiohead spin-off and very good it is too.

Controversial perhaps, but I think Bob Seger is better than Springsteen. Maybe not as prolific as The Boss in quantity of classics, but still think he has that edge in quality

Trying my "Get Up" mix from Apple music for the first time which is interesting. I'm not sure that a human DJ would ever put Georgia, RATM, The Doors and J Dilla next to each other.

I want to like Springsteen. Definitely one of the good guys; and he has written some decent songs. But his voice often grates on me and I find so much of his stuff sounds overblown and pompous.
