Whaaaat! You need a tastebud transplant.

A properly roasted parsnip is one of the finest taste experiences available to humankind.

I have tried to remain silent, or at least polite, in the face of Hanson haters and Rahic supporters, Fordy's negativity and Chaos' positivity, Trump proponents and Brexit opponents, moaning Minnies and happy clappers but this attack on one of the crowning glories of the vegetable kingdom must be criticised in the strongest possible terms: :poop:. Take that!

Now if you had said cauliflowers, then I would have agreed with you. Strongly. They truly are the devil's own food.

(Should I mention that I had an excellent crop of parsnips this year? I pulled the last about a week or so ago, and so have a fair few sitting in storage. One will appear at dinner in about an hour from now, sliced thinly, coated in flour and Parmesan, and fried til golden and crunchy. Mmmmm....)

And isn't it nice to be able to enjoy a good win and argue instead about vegetables? If we keep on doing this til May we'll have had a good season, or at least a non-relegation season, after all.

A good haul. Three first prizes, for garlic, bread and turnip. 8 second prizes for kale, courgette, onions, sweet pepper, pumpkin, tomato, pear, blackcurrant jam and apricot jam. 5 third prizes for carrots, chillies, cake, blackberry gin and French beans.
City won as well. Might have a sample of the gin later on tonight.

After a two year gap it was the West Yorkshire Organic Group's annual show today, where everything is judged on taste rather than appearance.
I managed to get a 1st prize for my Sioux lettuce, a second prize for a Kalibos red cabbage. A third prize for cavolo nero and also my pickled cucumber with dill. Three highly commendeds for a red pepper, garlic and Swedish rye and caraway bread.
First year my jam hasn't won anything. Must do better with that!

It's a while since I posted on this thread but I feel the need to show off.
I decided to give the Grimsby match a miss as I was entering stuff at the West Yorkshire Organic Show where the judging is based on taste not looks.
I entered stuff in the veg, fruit and homemade sections. I didn't give myself much of a chance, there were lots of really good looking entries. Much to my astonishment I got 5 first prizes, 4 second prizes and 6 third prizes plus a highly commended. I also won the trophy for the best bread exhibit and the best in show, again for the bread. The other first prizes were for beetroot, cake, squash and leaf beet. I don't think I will ever top these results.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. For me they are sweet, sickly, and most suited for putting straight on to the compost.

This evening I went to a Gardener's Question Time event that was part of the Saltaire Festival. It was chaired by Chris Cooper. On the panel there were experts in horticulture from Shipley College and elsewhere.
I asked about your chilli production issue. They had three suggestions. One is too much feed, encouraging leafy growth at the expense of fruiting - the plant makes fruit to propogate itself, if it thinks it is on to a cushy number, it will be happy to just sit there without making fruit. They thought this likely if you got no flowers at all.
The second option was not enough light - were they hidden amongst your tomatoes?
Finally, someone said are you sure they are chilli plants. I think you can discount this, as I thought you grew them from seed.
Hope this is useful. I made everyone laugh telling them about the vegetable patch thread on a football website.

Sorry, but that is parsnips. Utterly, utterly evil. The Trump of the vegetable world.

Spinach is lovely. A big pile of it, sweated in bitter. Yum!
And lamb & spinach curry is food of the gods.

Flash fried in chilli oil, only needs a few seconds to crisp up.

    Lovely

Red Cabbage, cooked with onion, garlic, apple, sugar, red vinegar, port, demerara sugar, allspice, cinnamon and thyme. Cooked at 140 for 3 or so hours. A meal in itself. Mmmmm :)
