I’ll throw in my statistic from the other thread.
13 times this calendar year a wicket has fallen before the score has reached 5.
They are poor foundations to build a decent test score from.
3 and 4 almost become another set of openers while the Aussie bowlers are still coming in at full tilt.

Wood gets Labuschagne. Crazy that he wasn't picked for Adelaide.

    Great first session for England.
Time to hammer it home and give themselves a great chance in this test match.

Bowlers get us back into the match. Batsmen virtually throw it away in one session. Miracles required from here. Quelle surprise.

At least they threw my “only getting to 5” statistic right back in my face.
Managed to get to 7 this innings before a wicket.
They should be very proud of themselves for righting these wrongs.

Come in Root and Silverwood your time is up.

Australia scored 267 and won by an innings.
Let them numbers sink in England cricket fans.

He said after the 2nd test that they were determined to put the mistakes right.
    Wow.
I’m glad they were up for this match or it could have been very embarrassing.

These figures for England batting in 2021 are staggering.Look past Root and the numbers show how poor the rest have been. DC27E8C2-0126-4106-A26D-A78E64680338.png

Still think I'm being hard on the Poms?

Our batting is nowhere near test class.

A journeyman 32 year old seamer comes in and takes 6 wickets for 7 runs on test debut!

    Utterly humiliating.

I'm now at the point where I want us to lose 5-0 so that there can be absolutely no excuses for heads not to roll at Captain, Coach and ECB level.

I think an innings defeat in a match where the opposition only scored 267 and you are dismissed for 68 when a lot of bottle was needed is enough for the whole system to be looked at.
This in a match that Root promised “we will come back stronger” after Adelaide.
Boland on his debut at 32 years old looked like he’d played 50 tests.
He’s probably 6th choice in the Aussie team if everybody’s fit and the England batters just couldn’t cope.
They’ve apparently been planning for 2 years for this Ashes series.
If serious questions aren’t asked about what that’s involved and how we’ve ended up at this point then we might as well just play white ball cricket from now on.

Problem is though, I can't see how much can be improved. No one looks like they can step up and build an innings. Stokes is broken. Root has too much pressure on his shoulders. The bowlers are all bang average. We can't keep relying on Anderson and Broad or feeling sad that Archer is injured.
As someone wrote, there should be National Service for England opening batsmen. Maybe then we'd find someone who can do something!

How about centrally contracted players ( they are, aren't they)....playing for England and occasionally their county instead of fecking off to IPL or any other of the moneypot cricket competitions.
    Just a thought.

An excellent interview with Ramprakash this morning. Highlighting that we can put out 3 sides that would probably be competitve in international white ball cricket but the complete opposite in red ball where there is no depth in terms of the next cabs off the ranks.

There is no doubt we are paying the cost of the over prioritisation of white ball cricket for the past 5 years. We can be competitive in both but need to find the balance. As poor as the current group have been the writing has been on the wall with last season's further impact of squeezing in the Hundred in prime season.

This tour is done. The players appear mentally shot, the type we have often seen here after a side has been touring for 3-4 months and just want to get onto the plane during the last test. The final tests will be non events in terms competition and viewing. That is if they even go ahead. Any Covid impact on a player will in all likelyhood lead to an early cancellation of the remaining games.

I envisage we will hear talk of yet another review. In my mind the immediate decisions which should be taken are:
Prioritisation next season of red ball cricket in the middle of summer.
    Scrap/park the Hundred.
Review of Central Contracts and the decison making that is preventing such players being available for County games.

Silverwood and a number of the backroom staff will, rightly or wrongly, carry the can for this tour. His 'supremo' role will end. Giles may go also but probably later as part of a wider shake up of the ECB structure.
Root will resign , due not getting the response from his team and fed up being required to front up. He has run out of excuses. I think he knows what the issues are but has either been a contributor to the key decisions or cannot in his current role say what he really feels.

A number of the current squad will see their last test cricket, notably Buttler, Bairstow and most of the rest of the batters will see minimal games in 2022 as a reset takes place.

The problem we have is most are on central contracts which will, wrongly, lead to them being given priority in selection.

The view of ex players in the media are still saying the best of the red ball payers are on this tour. But how long can you keep giving Crawley, Pope, Lawrence and Hameed opportunities if they don't deliver.

Problem is, "red ball" cricket is not where the money is. The media and organisers of cricket, want to give the fans high tempo, big hitting, over in a few hours cricket. I can't see it taking any priority ever again.

    Guilty as charged unfortunately.
Me and the wife have had season tickets for Yorkshire’s T20 games at Headingley for the last few years.
I’ve seen 1 day of county championship cricket in that same time.
And that was only because we were in Scarborough for a do that night.
The introduction of “the hundred” was another nail in the red ball cricket coffin I’m afraid.
