Expiration dates are irrelevant though. Thats why they have retained lists, to officially let players know they are getting released (or enter negotiations) and are free to talk to other clubs. They can sign a contract to start on July 1st and announce it whenever they want.

June the 1st for speaking to other clubs over a domestic move isn't it? Obviously there will be some discretion if the player is leaving anyway but I'm pretty sure that's the official date given.

 

Town announced Ledson on May 30th. Think if a player has been told he can go then wasnt aware of a date. Maybe for those who dont get released?

 

Officially it's 30 days from expiry of contract in this country that you can approach a player or 6 months before expiry the player is playing in another country. However, there is an unwritten rule that's accepted that you can start to talk to out of contract players as soon as the season is over as enforcing 30 days would be impossible. Even with the 6 months we've seen at the top level where Real Madrid clearly tapped up Mbappe and Alexander-Arnold long before the 6 months.

Its impossible to police. With Trent, Bellingham could have easily been the pre negotiator and FIFA couldnt do a damn thing about it. Just 2 friends discussing football...

 

Exactly, unless a club is really stupid and lets themselves get caught it's impossible to stop. Players will talk to each other as you say and most agents will have many players so they could officially be in a meeting for 1 player but talk about 3 or 4 other players

 

Yeah, there's definitely some discretion. The June 1st date probably only applies to those players clubs are trying to keep and will be largely ignored anyway no doubt!
