On balance ? Short term experience to get us out of this DIV or long term potential?

In this case, I think I'd prefer Critchlow just because we know what we are getting and there is that room to grow.....

However... I think this summer Hughes may go for more experienced heads in the team. How many times did we see "well, we are just 1 win from the top 3" or "win our game in hand and its ours" type comments from March onwards? And every time it came to the crunch, our players looked like mentally short, almost like they needed ideas. A few recent winners might be approached for short term benefit.

Especially as I'd be fairly confident one if not both parties between the club and Hughes will probably move on if we aren't celebrating promotion this time next year.

Reading up on Hussey he would be more of a competitor for the left back slot his attacking sounds better than his defending and he is a good crosser and set piece taker

Hussey has chosen to leave Stockport for family and location reasons - I can’t see a move to Bradford fixing that for him

I think he has just altered into a left sided CB over the last 18 months or so. Seems all but 3 of his starts at Stockport were as the LCB in a 3, more mixed at Vale, with him playing in the LCB slot when they had a back 5, or left back when they played a back 4.

He's currently living in Staffordshire it seems, not sure which promotion chasers are close to that area? Suppose Walsall will be the closest. Notts co isn't exactly a million miles out his way.

Read on their official announcement comments from fans that he is a London lad, so a move down south would be more likely. I'd much prefer Critchlow or Brough, bother better ages, with time to progress with us, or up sell somewhere else for us to invest again.

It is just these type of signings that have failed us previously and, short term benefits are definitely not the way I want to go.

Looks like he's living out near Stafford at the minute, not a great deal of L2 clubs there for him. If the family want a move down to London, he's pretty much stuck to Gillingham or Wimbledon, maybe Crawley depending on where in London.

On Stockport, it sounds like the never ending spending of the last few seasons might be close to ending, rumours are that they massively overspent looking to make it back to back promotions and the bank balance isn't as rosy as it has been. To put their spending in context, they outspent every other L2 club on agent fees over the last year, spending 3 times what City did. They also outspent all but 7 L1 clubs, and even spent more than Reading in the championship did on agent fees, they fell £10K short of spending the same as Rotherham, who made 12 Championship signings in that book keeping year span.

Tough as we already have a lot of the squad between that 24-30 mark. Looking at our CB room as it is, we have Platt at 25, Stubbs at 24, Odusina at 23 & Kelly at 24. All a very similar ball park of ages, maybe we need that 32+ guy with a few hundred EFL games under his belt to guide these younger lads. We conceded about 50% of our goals in the league this year from set pieces, maybe if we had a guy who had a large amount of experience in defence to organise on field the backline, we might manage better?

Looking at the teams who went up, Orient had Beckles (31) guiding their lads in defence. Stevenage had Piergianni (31) & Bostwick (35) along with Sweeney (29) who got promoted with FGR the season before. Northampton had their captain Guthrie who turns 31 this summer with CBs under 25 beside him. Carlisle had Huntington (35) with Mellish, Feeney or Barclay all around 25 completing their back 3.

For what it's worth, Critchlow turns 24 on Saturday, if we are signing him they might wait for a birthday reveal video?

If we had conceded so many goals from set pieces, maybe we need to go back to the drawing board. Dump zonal marking and start practicing defending against set pieces on the training pitch.

Or maybe signing him on his 24th birthday to avoid pay Town compensation money?

It's compensation still due if they didn't offer him a new deal?

In that particular area, lessons certainly haven't been learned throughout the entirety of last season. The big question of how we can reduce the number of goals conceded from set pieces is whether any lessons have been learned for the forthcoming season.

wouldn’t they have needed to offer a contract to get compensation?

Good stuff Jordan. I think we have that “old head” in Stubbs, but his pace can be an issue if our defence is caught upfield ( CreweAway) . The defence is “ arranged” by GH surely? He’s the set piece coach?

How many times have others and I said over the years. “ Wait until the bubble bursts” with the realisation money via loans has to be paid back or in County’s case the “gift” that stops giving?
