personally, I don't think 'marquee' signings cut it in League Two. most if not all of them are past their peak and really don't want to put the effort in.

even Mullin and stockton were unknowns before last season. we do have some proven good quality forwards and wingers now and personally I think this is one of the best squads we've had in years.

Think its fair to say that the summer recruitment this time around has been steady. Dig a bit deeper though and you can see that there has been a bit of emphasis on bringing players in who have been there, done it and amassed a lot of matches at our level. I think that's largely to combat the fragility and naivety that has been a theme of the past couple of seasons.

The core of last season's players that are still at the club who you'd probably say are our most talented players (O'Connor, Watt, Cooke) haven't actually played many games at league level. Kelleher may have been taken from non-league but has as much league level match experience than each of the three of the players previously mentioned from his Macclesfield days. Lavery is another example where he brings almost ten years of EFL experience.

So I'd say that Adams has identified that some of our key players might just be lacking a bit of nous for the key moments (like the run-in last season where we fell apart) and has focussed on improving that mix to get the best we can out of our more talented players. Songo'o and Watt feels like a particularly interesting example of this.

The same Oteh thats been shit at Walsall, Bradford, Stevenage, Colchester? Never proven himself anywhere.

Hes 22 and cant find a club. A very good reason for that.

I like Watt and think he's a good footballer. His statistics from last season in a dreadful side back it up too. Some may laugh but I think he's more suited to a higher level than this where you have a proper footballing match up in midfield rather than a scrap like there is most weeks at this level.

However if 300k allowed us to go out and sign 3 top level players for this level (including Watts replacement) then I think that may be the more sensible option.

You say it's not a total rebuild but you've just listed 7 positions to fill and 8 or 9 players in total we need to bring in?

Released Salford and former Plymouth defender Oscar Threlkeld is a target for us , he can play CH , full back or defensive midfield and he's only 26. This signing if it happens as Derek Adams all over it.

Update: bid rejected - weighing up a second offer.

We secured our second signing yesterday, however.

Let's be honest here. You need at least four Anthony O'connors to get anywhere near one Andrew Davies

I’m not a fan of “jack of all trades” footballers to be honest and didn’t like the fact McCall seemed to focus on this type of player. Get the best player available within our budget for the starting 11 and use the remaining squad for injuries etc. Someone who is half decent in one position and half decent in another, tends to be just an average player all round.

What's most worrying to me is that if we lose Cook and Cooke, we look screwed - again.

I'm not keen on this tiny squad philosophy, unless we're augmenting with additional loan players of legit quality.

I know we'll sign more players, but strength in depth is looking really shallow.

I don't think it was just a US philosopher who said that. I think we ALL thought Akpan was pants.

Cook is a scorer. A good old fashioned goal-hanger. If he can deliver us 20 goals, or near to, next season, I for one won't be worrying about his contribution anywhere else on the pitch. That's up to the other ten.
