Smallwood to leave.

It seems strange to offer power 2 years but only offer your captain who doesn’t miss a game 1year, if that is what’s happened.

 

No, he actually said the club hadn't offered him a "renewal" of his contract.

 

Because he is 35 years old and probably one of the highest earners. I dont think the club got rid of him anyway, looks like he wanted a 2 year deal and computer said no. So off he goes...

 

Utterly gobsmacked tbh.

Obviously that information I received over the weekend was wrong about it being done and will hold my hand up there as I was told it had been sorted out as a straight 2 yr deal but didn't I originally say last week the offer was 1 yr and a year option by the club which I said Smallwood wouldn't sign or have you missed that point.

Seen this mentioned a couple of time now but according to Smallwood he wasn’t offered anything at all.

A one-year renewal with an option for a second year is still considered a contract offer, irrespective of how favourable the terms were.

 

Sounds like negotiations didn't go well and too far apart - club probably didn't even bother offering anything formal if Richie was adamant he would only consider a 2 year deal. Why waste money sending over to the lawyers to draw up.

 

But Smallwood is saying he wasn't offered anything. Have you missed that point?

Okay for semantic purposes, I assume ‘discussions’ would have been around a deal that didn’t fit his wants

 

To not offer anything to your captain and player of the season, you have to be extremely confident in your replacement/recruitment plans.

I mentioned this a few weeks ago on a thread, but there is a lack of that old school ball winning midfielder in the game. We were pretty much the only club who used one looking at the play off matches and other sides that went up. After watching how badly we tried filling his void at the end of the season, I suggested maybe GA would consider a move away from the Smallwood role because its not one you can easily recruit for and we might move away from that midfield dynamic? Seems like it's a possibility at least now that we might go with the ball player and box to box runner combo other teams are using?

 

Im guessing his previous contract probably had a nice promotion increase in it, maybe 25% increase? Obviously as that has now expired, it doesnt get triggered. So not only would Richie be after a 2 year deal, he probably wanted a much higher wage than his previous deal.

 

One positive from all this...... at least someone else will be taking the set pieces next season

 

A shock, but good news in theory. If we haven't offered a contract then we are confident we can do better.
