First off, congratulations to Shrewsbury for having the guts to introduce this, but was anyone else underwhelmed by what they have actual installed? I thought they had replaced a whole stand not just a few rows at the back of a small stand behind the goal.

To be honest as an away fan, it didn’t seem any different to other “home ends” atmosphere wise, Accrington Stanley’s home end has been louder in the past. I think they have missed an opportunity to fully embrace the idea & should have replaced the whole stand, not just the small area they have.

If City were to do this the whole of the top tier or bottom tier of the Kop would be ideal.

The bottom tier would make an excellent standing area. The only problem being the Bantams bar patrons, unless they made that particular corporate area a standing section too.

The plain and very simple fact, Bingley, is cost. Talking to Shrews Chairman the 550 spaces they converted was all they could afford, it is so expensive and that with some sponsorship and, I believe, crowd funding as well.
We discussed what areas we could do and rather than Shrews, you're right, it would need fuller sections. Non starter.

As @wetherbywhaler@wetherbywhaler has said at the moment safe standing is wonderful in theory but in practice it's a long way off becoming common due to the costing, without installation and safety costs you are looking at last £80 per seat. shrewsbury needed to raise around £75,000 to install the seats, Celtic have installed 2600 seats in 1 corner and that cost them around 500k. So the cost will put off a lot of clubs especially as it doesn't increase capacity by a lot if at all and people will be wanting reduced prices for standing so if anything clubs could lose money compared with what they get now.

Aside from the cost implications of installing the seating we'd need pretty clear evidence that it would be used by enough supporters to be financially viable. Whilst the vast majority of football fans think that there should be an option to stand at football matches, a recent survey commissioned by the Premier League showed that only 5% of fans actually want to stand for an entire match.

As a small scale experiment the bottom of the north west corner could be a viable option. Little impact on any other seating area, but I'm not sure how many spaces you would get in there.

Who would use it? The view is rubbish in the bottom of the north west corner.

No point really, the atmosphere can be intimidating as it is now and the stadium is far from capacity so no need to have standing room.

    Interesting point about the cost.

Simple solution is that the seats say in lower kop (or maybe a couple of blocks) are changed for safe standing and on top of the season ticket fee there’s a one off charge of say £80 (to cover the installation). If people are that bothered about safe standing £80 is a great deal if you have the same seat season after season.

Shrews cost per seat, without saying the actual cost, was close to £150, excluding the cost of removal of existing and hey made no adjustment to the terracing layout/dimensions. As I said before, not on.

Thanks for the updated figure. I’m thinking then if the fans paid say £200 per seat that may cover it.

It wouldn’t affect me and I’m not particularly interested in it.

But do think that if fans want different seats to others they could / should pay for it.

(For instance, I’d be interested in getting a padded for mine, with arm rests..... But I wouldn’t expect the club to pay for that change).

I think I, and others (@Storck@Storck if I remember) covered this extensively in the past. As far as I could see, there would be a loss of rows given the required depth, and also seats as the ‘Safe Standing’ ones are wider than the current ones. So at a guess a reduction of capacity of somewhere between 5-10% per block in the Kop. Could you confirm that this would be the case, as if City had explored the possibility, I guess there would have been a feasibility study, which amongst other issues, would have looked at the actual space required?

    Thanks.

Not me but then I'm not really bothered about safe standing. If people really want it and that's where it was installed they would have to go there.
I was only suggesting a place that would have little impact on others around, such as the bantams bar if it was placed in the lower kop.

That would need to be an extra £200, so would put the actual cost of a ST around the £350 if the plan was to cover the cost in the first year.

Not sure how many would sign up to that.

The need for any adjustment to the terracing layout would obviously depend on the current depth of each row. Looking at the depth of the row I sit on and the dimensions given by the manufacturers of the seats fitted by Celtic our steps wouldn’t be deep enough to fit and sit comfortably unless it was restricted to those that were slim enough, so not many of our fans.

Obviously other areas of the ground could have deeper steps so wouldn’t need alterations.
