Just read that John Doherty has died. Certainly not our most popular manager, but I do remember him bringing in a few players. Mostly notably Babb from Millwall.

Produced better football than what we have today and that’s saying something. At least we scored goals.

Wow, that's some statement. JDs football was certainly down there, I'm not sure even GAs is quite that bad (yet)

IMG_4208.jpeg IMG_4207.jpeg IMG_4209.jpeg So I dug out this programme from the JD years and it was interesting the read his words that we’d won 3 on the bounce and not conceded a goal. The football might not have been pretty at times but we won football matches especially at home

I stand by that statement, JD’s football was better than we see today. Fact!

Who out of our current squad would get into that team from 1991?
I’d say Andy Cook to replace Torpey and Pointon to replace Treacy.
    Nobody else

League above and had a good strike force.
Although the standard throughout the divisions has increased massively since then.

Docherty was manager in my first season - 1990. He saw enough in Sean McCarthy to bring him to the club so he did get some things right!

Those were some pretty lean years in all fairness - Docherty, Stapleton and Lawrence, before Kammy and Jagger brought me some joy with BCAFC.

    RIP JD

Before my time, but I've heard him spoken about on here.

Always sad to lose a Bradford City alumnus.

    RIP.

You’re right, those years weren’t the best and with record low home crowds it was a pretty poor matchday experience but I’d say the last 7 years have been worse.

There's a whole myriad of other threads where you can express how crap everything is, who's to blame and where it stands in the purgatory ratings with other eras. I don't see any merit in turning this one into yet another one.

Who rattled your cage? Many people widely regard the ‘Docherty’ years as the worst ever time to be a City fan so it’s relevant conversation and I’m using this thread to point out it wasn’t quite that bad. You could say that’s positive in comparison to today, not quite a ringing endorsement of his style of football but still better than the current setup.
However if you want this thread to be used as some kind of morbid tribute to John Docherty then I’ll leave it there. Mods feel free to remove all my irrelevant posts from this thread.

    RIP JD.

That’s a cracking team. Terriers with a decent few too. 2-2 according to the internet..not sure of the scorers.

Sure I recall that Preston game he mentions in the program notes.

I Was only about ten, but recall the plastic pitch and the game being played with a ridiculous wind.

Tommo in net was contending with all the rubbish from a bin that had blown over , he had a tornado over crisp packets blowing round him at one point.

Babb scored 2 or 3 goals

Strange how you remember games from over 30 years ago but remember nothing about games from two weeks ago because you were just sat their half arsed and spending most the game on your phone or talking to a mate

It was a tough time for him to manage us so soon after the nearly season of 87/88 and then relegation. The fans expected an immediate return to the 2nd tier but it just never happened despite plenty of investment from the owner.
