What did you reckon, @How@How ?

I thought it was excellent and no surprise that the national critics have taken a shine.

Money isn't everything, but value is, and last week we ate at the Hawthorn in Haworth. I like the place although it seems a little less ambitious than a previous visit. Anyway, a shared starter (fish platter thing), plus 2 mains and a bottle of summat came to about £100 there. It was very decent.

However at Engine there were numerous plates of this and that (I usually swerve small plates places unless it's just 2 of us) plus a bottle of cremant and 2 pints for about 15 quid less. It felt like really good value for some quality cooking.

I went Saturday afternoon. Booked in for 2pm and we went as a 4, with 2 people who were regulars so knew the owner
honestly I thought it was amazing food. I ordered probably about 2 dishes too many but I’d looked at the menu most of the week in anticipation and when I got there couldn’t narrow it down so went for the lot. And I’m glad i did. I was stuffed but had the lamb special if you had anything from the specials menu? Loved that. We also had the flatbreads to share some patatas bravas. All the usual tapas type stuff was done so well.

To be honest I thought it was really good value as you said for the quality and amount you go of each dish. I had the Alhambra lager with mine ( I know pints of lager with a meal) but it was good quality. Never had it before.

would highly recommend it to anyone and loved the casual feel of it too, just bring the food over when it’s ready.

Went to the hogs head behind for a drink afterwards too and that was quite nice outside in the sun.

As a side note, lot of curry chat on here and on the way home from a day out today called at 3 Singhs as it was on the way home and doing the 2 for 1 on curries as usual on a Monday.
It was average I thought and without 2 for 1 I don’t think I’d be rushing back. All pretty bog standard really for my liking

Glad you enjoyed too. I was also on the Alhambra - not usually a big fan but it seemed to do the job.

We sat up at the counter to awkwardly watch tbe chefs do their thing. For meit was easily on a par with the big hitters in Leeds and Manchester.

Interesting re the Three Singhs. If you really fancy hanging one on in Sowerby next time, my mate said the big curry place there opposite Engine is very good.

Just got back from tea at the Shibden Mill Inn. Splendid stuff.

If you ever find yourself unfortunate enough to be stuck in Suffolk, then I can recommend Thai Street Cafe in Aldeburgh, consistently good - a little gem in a big pile of $h1t.

It all sounds pretty good, TBF.

But, as you know, I'm one of the minority you reference who bemoan the loss of the old Angel. Somewhat contrary to your comment, I think the old Angel did a lot more than bang out home comforts. What made it so special for me was that it consistently produced very good standard restaurant-quality food within the comforts of a traditional pub, including its unique fish specials bar menu. You could go in in your walking gear, get a decent pint and eat to the same standard, if not the full choice, of those dining in the adjacent restaurant. It was much better than the vast majority of pub food. I also had some excellent meals in the restaurant itself which were well outside the realms of home comforts (not that there's anything wrong with home comfort food, of course). But it's gone now, never to return, which for me is a sorrow. I can go to any number of fancy restaurants, but traditional country pub bar food with the culinary standards of the old Angel, in prime walking country, is a rare thing indeed.

I hear yer, especially that last sentence.

For what it'a worth, we had (in my opinion) excellent fish and chips, and a pie, at the Shibden Mill Inn last week. Not quite the same, I know, but still.

So a visit to the Bull at Broughton. Simple food (I had the Steak and Ale Pie) done very well. As this was lunchtime I only had a single beer (Hetton Pale Ale) as I was on driving duty. Very decent straight forward and clearly a step up from more standard pub food. Well worth the visit. Only downside is the Le Mans race track of the A59, which is really awkward if you want to turn right towards Skipton. Thoroughly recommend.

We ended up there when we couldn't get in at the Keelham Farm shop (Skipton) cafe.

Completely agree with your verdict. Busy on a weekday lunchtime, too

Had a special night away at the Forest Side, Grasmere at the end of April. We had the set menu and I have to say every course was expertly executed and the range of flavours was excellent. It is relatively expensive and came in at over £500 for DBB and the drinks. I avoided the paired wines, as there are several white grapes which I am not keen on (everyone to their personal choice). As a package it was excellent and I would certainly recommend it.

When we were north of the border, we ate Osso in Peebles. We had been there a few years previously and had enjoyed the meal. It was a ‘small plates’ menu. I found that the range of dishes didn’t particularly compliment each other. One was so hot (Wasabi sauce), that it overwhelmed later courses. Interesting, but not one I would rush back to. Potentially in @The Original EB@The Original EB ’s orbit?

Another small culinary treat. This time we had a couple of nights at the 100 of Ashendon not far from Aylesbury. Day trip to Waddesdon/Oxford/ and the shopping paradise (ish) which is Bicester Village!
This was a DBB package. The meal was three courses from the menu of the day. Cost for the package was £260 and the drinks over two nights added a further £88. The quality of the cooking was excellent, the ingredients thoughtful and balanced. We thoroughly enjoyed both nights. This is a good pub, so a bonus was a couple of decent local beers. If you are looking for a break, then I thoroughly recommend the 100 of Ashendon. I would say it is on a par with the Shibden Mill Inn. https://www.thehundred.co.uk/

Been watching Britain’s top takeaways on the iPlayer. I haven’t watched the Indian episode yet, but I know the Sweet centre up Lumb lane are on…Other local ones that are on. Bear kitchen in Wakefield, if burgers are your thing. I do like a burger, but I do find it hard to find one I really like, but I think I’d like to try there’s..Enver’s bar and grill near Hillsborough, relatively local to me, I’ll definitely be making a trip down there.

Is Sweet Centre takeaway the same people as the restaurant a couple of doors down? Presume so.

Either way we went for brekkie last year with a former colleague. Superb.
