Went to Buon Apps in Otley at the weekend. Haven't been since before the lockdowns started. The food was exceptional. I can't recommend it highly enough.

This is a place I've heard great things about but have never been to.

What was so good about the food?

I'm generally very underwhelmed by the boring predictability of most British Italian restaurant menus. One of the world's great cuisines, with huge regional variety and we only ever seem to get the same standard pizzas, limited pasta sauces and dull chicken or steak meat dishes. It would be good to eat more authentic Italian food for a change.

Do they have a covered outside area with heaters by any chance?

Hiya. I think it will tick all your boxes. Big covered heated outdoor area and a menu miles away from the standard fair. Have a look at the menus online. The wine list is far from standard too. I had carpaccio with chicory and then a fantastic tuscan fish stew. The Mrs had seabass on a mussel and prawn risotto. Our friends had aubergine and mint croquettes, scallops, turbot, and the fish stew again.. italian cheeses and pannetone bread and butter pudding to finish. Super Italian ripasso style red i hadn't heard of before and a decent Gavi. Have I got your tastebuds going yet :joy:

We may have discussed this before, but La Laconda in Gisburn is top-notch. As much as I do enjoy a pizza/pasta place the stuff here takes a far more regional approach.

Although the aged olive grappa I sipped at the bar after eating was a bit too 'interesting' even for me.

Was thinking the same, love reading the food reviews on here, it takes my mind off the absolute s***e served up by our first team!
I went to the Angel at Hetton on the 22nd of December, had the tasting menu and paired wines, it was without doubt THE best dining experience I’ve ever had and I’ve eaten at some top places including penny Park where Wignall first made his name. Stayed over in one of their cottages across the road, had breakfast on Christmas Eve which was the only weird part of the experience, fancied a full English and got a breakfast tasting menu with consented essence of Black pudding........
Come on people don’t mess with breakfast.
The guy who served us Breakfast was a big City fan which cheered me up, then went to Grassington which was picture perfect Christmassy, much better than a pretend German market in L**ds. I guess my inner working class Bradford finds it hard to spend that much money on a meal and night away.
Fantastic night, still justifying the cost!

Funny that you mention the Angel - we're going in a couple of weeks. Sounds like it should be a good visit.

The breakfast sounds like a similar set-up to the one at the Freemasons at Wiswell (worth a visit when considering your next pub overnighter), which was a multi-course job. Bit much for 8am perhaps, but adds to the experience I suppose.

    https://eatingthenorth.com/2020/11/19/the-freemasons-at-wiswell-review/

We did the Shibden Mill Inn for Christmas Eve. 45 quid for 3 generous courses, and even a cynic like me was impressed by the festive-ness of the night. It's not cheap, I know, but the Christmas dinner was fully loaded and we couldn't finish it. Found space for post-meal Guinness, however.

All 3 of the boozers mentioned here, coincidentally, were part of the Top 50 Gastropub list announcement yesterday.

Did Tharavadu in Leeds the other week. People seem to properly love it, but I thought it was so-so.

Had the meat thali which started with a brilliant fish soup, but then the little portions of curry (the meat ones, anyway,) were pretty indistinguishable. The veg stuff was better and the bread was bang-on.

It was all a bit of a rush. The desserts came while folk were still eating their mains, and the bill arrived - unrequested - about three spoonfuls into pudding.

Went to Bundobust nextdoor afterwards for a drink, and watched on enviously as folk in there ate better stuff than I'd just had.

It's a big stretch to describe the Angel at Hetton as a 'boozer' these days. I used to love the place - fantastic country pub with terrific food. It was great that you could sit in the bar and enjoy the same quality food as was served in the excellent restaurant. It was the only pub I've ever been in that had a discreet fish specials board for bar meals.

Now the place has been gutted and turned into a trendy restaurant. Meltham's comment about the pretententious breakfast doesn't surprise me.
My wife and I turned up on spec on the way home from a stay in the Lakes a while back, intending to get a light bar meal, but no dice. No separate bar and restaurant now - it's like an aircraft hanger. The food may be excellent, for all I know, but I think it's an act of sheer vandalism on what used to be a truly exceptional country pub. Rant over

Point taken. I visited the old place a couple of times and have followed the (extensive!) renovations with interest. It looks very different.

I would add that on our last visit in its previous guise we were the only ones having a drink at about 9pm on a Sat'day.

I have been to Tharavadu a few times and its seems hit and miss to me too. The Dosas are brilliant but some of the fish stuff a bit disappointing. I'll be honest I didn't like Bundobust at all. Ended up having a heated discussion with the manager. We ordered one of their set menus/selections for 4 people, but several of the dishes came with only 3 items i.e 3 bhajis, 3 samosas. I tried to explain that this seemed a bit daft in a meal for 4 but the only reply I got was "well that's the portion size". Haven't been back since.

Home’s new place in Leeds is really nice. We were at Northcote the other week for the tasting menu, very nice but panicked a bit as we weren’t sure if we were going to get home in time to collect the bratz from school.

Never been but only heard good things except for the price, sounds top end but happy to pay if it’s exceptional.

Mumbai Village in Guisley better than any curry in Bradford and trust me I’ve been to every single one and would not give it that accolade lightly. Absolutely wonderful curry and service, fully licensed also !

Three Acres in Emley by the iconic mast(dog botherer land I know ). Truly spectacular place, food is out of this world with incredible service. It has accommodation and we went and stayed over as we wanted to go walking both days, views are spectacular. Go in summer ideally. Bloody pricey but treat yourself it’s something special.
