As in many Cities there are some truly awful areas of Bradford, including the centre.

However, you dont have to drive so far to find yourself in nice areas and open countryside.

Back to eating out, I wouldnt have a clue where to go for food in the city centre. A girl at work who lives in Huddersfield asked me this week as she was going to the Alhambra. I said I didnt have a clue, apart from maybe trying Zizzi as she was parking in Broadway, although Ive personally never tried it. I shall see her tomorrow and ask where she went

No I didn't imagine it! He's just been mentioned on Calendar. He's been suspended from the Conservative party today!

Now then. I went partly because it's a new chef: former Mastercheffer (aren't they all now?) and head chef at excellent Norse (now closed) and Horto at Rudding Park.

He's updated the menu and the food was topnotch - claasic stuff with a modern slant.

However it's a large space and at one point I was the only one in, which felt a bit weird.

Starters were 10-15 quid, mains 20+. Had a creme brulee cos I was on my tod and it'd be hard to get 600 words out of 2 dishes...

I said I wouldn't go again but I was hungry..........and running out of cash due to the Leeds Xmas market prices, 2 x 175ml of mulled wine £12!:eek2: The market has a great atmosphere but really, it's full of tat that you'd never consider at any other time.

So Spoons again, last Monday, The Cuthbert Broderick was rammed not a seat to be had so we walked down to Becketts Bank. 3 x Vegan burgers and chips, 1 x Shipyard Pale Ale, 1 x 175ml Pinot & 1 glass of water came to £18 summat. The meals were garbage, again, the burgers were the plant based ones from a Leeds company, they tasted of nothing, not even bleedin plants and the were comically similar in appearance to plastic burgers like in little girls toy kitchen sets, wished I'd taken a pic. Chips were lukewarm and soft, the bits of onion & tomato in my burger were the highlights for me. Still....it was £18 for 3 meals..........when will I learn.

Friday night and into the Sir Norman Rae at Shipley as I couldn't walk anymore towards Fanny's without a beer for the final leg. We decided to order off the Xmas menu, a Brie & Chili jam 11" pizza and share it. When you read that menu the calories are startling, some burgers are 1500/1600 calories, add your beer and that's nearly 2000, wow! What a surprise, the first food that I've ever actually enjoyed eating in a Spoons, I'd have happily paid £15 for that in Leeds, hot, crisp base, ample cheese & jam, bang on, can't remember but think it was £8.

Went in the spoons in Ilkley in between bars to grab a quick burger and a pint (Brewdog Punk) and it was something like £8/9 for the burger and pint. It is what it is - it's not gourmet but its a decent enough burger, chips and onion rings plus the pint anywhere else would have been £4+.

Had a few take aways from Roti Express, down the side of Mahad foods...lower rushton st I think. Old fashioned traditional Pakistani cafe type food, no frills but more than decent. It's all out in Tupperware containers and you heat it up at home. Had 2 massive and really good shami kebabs, onion bhaji, chicken and spinach with 4 huge roti...all for 6 quid. Got given an onion bhaji, chicken pakora and cauli and potato pakora to nibble on in the car home as a freebie. The yoghurt/mint sauce is a bit weak and watery but everything else is Bob on, and it's cheaper than chips! Been a few times now and can't imagine anywhere as good for the money.

Didn't know it'd opened. Mate's a Bfd curry fan but lives in Northowram and generally rates the Halifax spot.

The Shibden Mill Inn's been included in the "Top 50 Gastropubs" list for the first time.

Although the term "gastropub" seems well out of date as a list it's well respected and generally consistent. Good on 'em.

Being on the Bradford-Halifax border I obviously now class it as my local.
