I don’t regard Smith was a player to “ develop” in a million years , he dropped a number of levels to us from “ bigger” clubs .

It will be a tough challenge to move on at least three of them. But that's what we need to do.

No surprises in the retained list really other than perhaps keeping the 2 youngsters who appear to have struggled with their respective loan spells.

What they did was like booing Stuart McCall, John Hendrie, Bobby Campbell etc onto the pitch. Would not have ever happened. Ever. Classless.

Despite being 28 when the season starts, never having played at that level and apart from a 3 month spell in 2 seasons looked anything from average at best to a complete calamity in the league below?

Each to their own but not for me.

I don't think many would disagree Real Madrid are a bigger club but IMO there is little comparison with regards the quality of the Premier League to La Liga, playing very competitive football week in week out to basically a stroll in the park for possibly 30 games a season.
How things have change from the days of playing League One Football back in the day for the one clubs would be many professional's dream, even at our level we had many players who played virtually all the careers at Valley Parade, I bet you can name a fair few who did the same at West Ham, although the likes of Moore played for Fulham he had 544 games for West Ham, Trevor Brooking another 500+ games for West Ham, similar with Billy Bonds who started his career at Charlton Athletic but he was rebounded for his 650+ appearances for West Ham.

Most of our team through the 60's and 70's were semi professional.

Basically meaning they had other jobs as well as football.

(I can hear the "professionals " of today fainting).

    Don't agree.

We ended up paying a player more than we wanted to AND risked demotivating him.

It's all worked out in the end, but that was a poor piece of work on our part.

Let's hope those involved have learned lessons.

I dispute that claim. Some signed as amateurs before becoming full time professionals. The only part-timer I can recall was David Fretwell.

Correct, our players in the 60s and 70s were full time professionals. Bob Martin the chairman in the 70s considered part time football but it never happened. A few years ago I was talking to players from the 1960s, Tom Hallett,Charlie Rackstraw, Jimmy Cuthbertson and they were all full time but only on about £18 per week. That was probably the average wage in the country in those days.
