The word "Paki" dates back to the 60's when incidents of "Paki bashing" took place. The consequence being that the term became associated with violence towards a race and can (depending on the context) be used as a racial slur. "Brit" "Aussie" and "Scot" don't carry the same historical significance, hence why there's no reason to take offence at being called one.

Surely you understand the fact that the p word has predominantly used as the term of choice for people who racially abuse people of Pakistani heritage. Can you see how that might alter the implications of that word?

No. There are some words and the p**i is one of them that in the UK are widely accepted as racial slurs. I trust that our country will never get back to an era when derogatory words such as wogs or coloureds or coon or the n word are considered as anything other than in most contexts are what they really are, racial slurs.

Exactly m8. The word P**i and N****r are used regularly on you tube videos between people of whom the term is sometimes referred. Then you get the usual whoppers who complain 'Well if they can use it why can't we?" And therein lies the world of context. If you aren't sure whether you should use a controversial 'word' chances are you shouldn't. Will that stop thick people from doing so? Not a hope in hell.

I understand that point perfectly and I'm sure for some it creates confusion in some quarters and a belief that if 'they' can use the word so can I. But the people you describe are completely missing the point.

A lot of black musicians in the 20's started to use the word 'man' as a greeting or form of friendship... 'Hey man, how's it going?' It's now almost universal. But it was originally used by the black musicians in an ironic way and as a counter to the word 'boy' which was endemic during the slave years as a way of demeaning the black slaves especially in the states. The inference of the phrase being 'we're no long boys, we're now men'! This is how I see the use of the n word being used by groups of black guys amongst themselves. It does not in my view justify others using it towards them given the history and symbolism of the word.

The only time you will more than likely here those words spoken, unless from a black man to a black man, is to try and offend. I say more than likely, my mum still uses the term coloured from time to time. She's in her late 70s and is not said to offend. Again all in context.

Ah yes the old 'if they can say it, why can't I' argument. Like it's some privilege we are being denied of. To me the reason is so obvious as well.

Its the sort of reply in an argument about racism where you hold your hands up and think 'Arrgh what's the point, we clearly can't educate mince.'

Thank you Tawheed - But you don't have to explain any of that to ME. I was born and bred in Manningham, and as the only White English founder player in a predominantly Black Manningham FC, I learnt as a thirteen year old just what racism was all about. I became the victim who was 'stoned'.

I have no problem with people using the term, i'd like to think i'm intelligent enough to know when someone is using a derogatory term. Like i've said before they're only words. Its the person on the receiving end of them who has to interpret in what context those words are being used.

Please tell us more about how much racial abuse you had to put up with growing up as a white teenager. I'm sure it was on a huge scale compared to your black and Asian counterparts. I'm surprised you didn't start up your own civil rights movement.

None of that detracts from the fact that "p*ki" is a word that derives from historical violence towards a race, is often used to insult those of a particular race and can therefore be used as a racist term. It's why the term is more than just a mere abbreviation and isn't comparative to "Scot" "Brit" or "Yank". It's not PC gone mad to call a racial slur exactly what it is.
