But they come straight back down. We can’t allow that to happen.

So, my point is our squad needs massive work for us to stay in league one. key decisions have to be made.

The club now needs to kick on! Rupp needs to decide if he is the man to make that happen.

    Absolutely bang on
It’s taken long enough to turn this juggernaut around and get it moving in the right direction
Need to keep the momentum and good will going

I guess it ultimately depends on £’s. Understand he is happy in the area so location likely to play a part. IMO he should still be playing EFL football, but not sure that’s as much as thing nowadays as it used to be as the gulf is smaller.

What is for sure, he’s been a great servant to the club and at times a real joy to watch and comes across a really decent guy. I always find it sad to see players leave that we have a connection with, but what is certain is there ultimately comes a time for players to move on.

Agree with @Faithful Bantam@Faithful Bantam , add Halliday to that list. In addition I’d include Sam Walker providing he’s got a decent back line ahead of him. I also think Baldwin will transition fine but again needs quality alongside him. I’d like to see us go all out to sign as good a new CB as we can afford.

I agree with you. There's a good feeling around the place at the moment, built upon some good results and culminating in promotion to Div 1. The club have tapped into that already but there's still much to do to prepare a squad capable of establishing itself at the next level. There will be other clubs who fancy their chances at the Championship level and build their squad accordingly. I'm far from convinced that that would be our mindset; there'll be so much to do to simply maintain our newly found Div 1 status.

The squad needs a serious overhaul .. again. Our recruitment will of course be critical but I'm convinced that Sharpe and Alexander will already have their lists. You'd hope that our recent successes and the draw of large crowds would act as a bit of a magnet for attracting the right talent. Much however will depend upon whether we can attract the type of players we need and for that we'll need to be offering the right packages. Hopefully Alexander will be provided with a playing budget which can do just that. Equally there'll be some currently under contract who will be surplus to requirements. We mustn't be sentimental about that but it's not always the easiest thing to do to encourage contracted players to go elsewhere. They may well feel that as part of a promotion winning squad they deserve a go in Div 1. I suspect Sharpe and Alexander won't have the easiest job in pruning some of the squad. The next three months could be a surprising time.

We should absolutely soak up every minute of enjoyment, and this isn't intended to piss on anyone's chips - but we need realism too. We JUST scraped into 3rd place in what was the poorest League 2 during our stay. If it hadn't been for an unprecedented, Devon Loch type implosion by Walsall, we'd be in the play offs. Great home form, poor away form and awful in game management at key times.

We can't be complacent or wear rose tinted specs. Serious quality needs adding, and serious investment needs to be made. Or else Ryan Sparks will come to rue the 'we won't be returning to League 2' remark in the way that the 'no room for mediocrity' statement has followed him around.....

Whilst I do think obviously we have to go out and get a bit of quality in. I think it will be the quality of our loan players next season that will decide our fate.
We are now league one we have big crowds and could be a good testing ground for developing good players. I hope our management team have good contacts in order to find these players. And we need to continue to bring in players that can blend in so that we can keep that tremendous team spirit which is so important

As I said very few come straight back down in their first season. Obviously we need a good recruitment but to say most players that we have already aren't L1 capable is a bit of an overstatement. As I said elsewhere we are probably seeing around a dozen players leave either out of contract or loan returns plus a few in contract that will likely move on Smith oduor etc and I do see us bringing in 10/12 players to add to what we have however I don't see us going all out signing say 18 newbies as if you believe only a handful are good enough that's what would be required.

And I'd say a good marker of squad strength would be the likes of Smallwood, Halliday, Pattison, not being nailed on first team picks. If they're seen as squad players, we'll be pushing into the playoff conversation I reckon.

Getting the likes of Oliver of the wage bill and his reported £3500+ per week will help
£500,000 pounds or about £70,000 per goal

We use Wallsall because we just pipped them but at Christmas we lost cook and since then overtook all our rivals as far as points gained. I knew since I saw the fixture list that it was going to be a very tough run in.

I don't disagree with any of that but it's also worth bearing in mind that if we'd been able to pick our 11 best players for the majority of the season instead of being without them for large chunks of it, our promotion would have been secured much sooner and we'd probably have gone up as champions.

It wasn't a comprehensive or exhaustive exercise, but because I wasn't interested in what Mrs H had put on the telly I had a look at the latest financials for a few L1 clubs for 23/24. Made interesting reading the clubs operating to sizeable defecits and needing significant owner cash injections. We aren't in a bad position, if sensible but still ambitious, to be competing for players and building a decent L1 squad.

City were lucky to be automatic promoted. We came up against the biggest bottle jobs in football Walsall who didn’t win in something like 15 games.

Yes, we take it but we shouldn’t have made it so difficult which highlights to me our current squad isn’t good enough for league 1.

The cheque book really needs to come out our we are going straight back down. We need Sharpe and GA to enjoy the next few days then get straight back to work.

I can’t be doing with league 2 again. Painful that was. Let’s build. Move this club forward now. Invest to attract.

Not saying we are L**ds but look what they did get promoted and straight away say they are extending their ground. That will attract players to join them. We need now to show ambition. The fan base is there..

Over to you now Rupp and Sparks- Do your jobs!

That position in Div 1 has changed dramatically over the last 4 or 5 years. There are many more owners who have been willing to subsidise their clubs in recent times. I know that Rupp put some of his own money - just over a million - into our club in that year which is encouraging. I don't however know how well we'll be placed in that company and whether we can expect further funds in the coming season. I guess we'll have an indication once we see the strength of our summer recruitment.

Right now, I'm just happy to have secured promotion however and by whatever means.

But I think I'm right in saying our points total is one of the lowest for L2 automatic promotion? We can't over estimate our level of strength as we prepare next season. Because we're going from a historically weak L2, to an historically very strong League One.

It “ sounds “ a great idea , but as an example Walsall got Wheatley from Manure ( To replace Lowe) , he still played for Manure representative sides whilst at Walsall , he’s trained regularly in both camps ……He’s been utter garbage in men’s football. His first game , remember was at VP I think. He came on when Matt got taken off…… Bambi on ice , Walsall fans arnt exactly enamoured . As he’s hardly played .

He hasn't. And he should be kept. But if we want to have a strong season, we need to reduce our reliance. If he's more of a squad member than a regular starter, we'll be on the right tracks. Remember, least time we needed a Josh Cullen in midfield and it still wasn't quite enough.
