Planning for League One

Personally I think we need about 10 new players.

 

Some of the previous views on league 1 seem to be based on a one off game against Birmingham.

Yes we ran them close (based on end result rather than actual game) but doing it in a one off game is very different to a week in week out Saturday/Tuesday season.

Lower league teams regularly beat teams ranked a lot higher but that doesn’t mean they can do it on a season long basis.

As much as being satisfied finishing 4th bottom will be seen as defeatist,I think we need to be realistic and I don’t think we will be anywhere near the play off places.
Admittedly we have a lot of momentum and a packed VP every other week should be an advantage but I think we need to realise that we can’t run before we can walk.
We need a minimum of 6 players of quality,a big rub of the green and a fair bit of luck.

 

I watched the game aswell and didn't think the standard was as amazing as some people are making out

Some have said just surviving in league 1 would be ok.

I just think without significantly strengthening this current team we will be nowhere near the play offs and I think we are slightly over egging how good we are.

Our player of the year (by a distance) and our main goal threat are both 34 and Cook is unlikely to be the same player due to his potentially career shortening injury.
Our 2 best goalscoring midfielders only started 24 and 20 games.
2 of our best (??) defenders were on loan and Byrne is shit.
I’m still not convinced Kav can step up.

Us fans have backed the club with the incredible number of season tickets bought.
Rupp and Sparks have said they understand what’s needed.

I just think it’s a bit bigger job than some others think to be challenging for the top 7 places.

I hope that I’m massively wrong.

 

Sorry but I cant agree with this mentality. Why shouldnt we be looking to challenge? Are you suggesting we say no to interested players that might be a bit decent and instead target 'squad fillers'?

We should be at the very least developing a competetive L1 squad that has a chance of nicking a play off spot.

 

Exactly. Aim for the top and fall a bit short, it will still be a good first season back in league 1, but aim for just staying up and fall short of that and it could be disastrous.

 

The pace is higher for sure.

Only joking clearly a mistake but the bottom 4 in league one get relegated, finishing 4th bottom would resign us to another year of watching league 2 dross. I’m not sure anyone would say they are happy finishing 4th bottom. However, finishing 5th bottom? Yes I’d snatch your hand off

 

Trying to aim for mid table or lower will definitely see us drop through the hatch again, and that would damage this club irrevocably in my view.

We have to aim for playoffs or auto’s. The budget should reflect the size of the fan base. Will Rupp give the go ahead for a much bigger budget? Not sure but let’s see.

 

Totally agree. Major surgery needed through the core of the team. Strength, pace and fitness are key. We need 7 or 8 L1 upgrades to the first team next season plus squad fillers. Big job and not easy or cheap !

Currently our squad overall our squad isn’t good enough. No way!

I would loan Kav out to a league 2 club. Like him as a person but he isn’t League 1 standards yet.

We need an overhaul in midfield and forward line plus defensive. It’s a big job.

As I keep saying tough decisions need to be made for us to stay up.

 

Additions will be made but we will stay up no problem even if only made a few signings and tweaks. You will be surprised how many players from L2 do well in a newly promoted L1 side.

 

I just get the feeling after last Saturday that Rupp final REALLY gets it.Hollow words on paper are one thing but to see how he was after the game was another.

I am absolutely certain Sharp already has a list A and list B of targets-probably started months ago. The retained list will alos have been set as list A and List B depending where we ended up.

We have some properly exciting times ahead and I don't think for one second we won't want to compile a squad capable of promotion. Why not? I would imagine there are quite a few clubs in League 1 that won't have the budget we will have (upwards of £12 mill at least?) (apart from Luton) or have severe debts that the owners are taking a hit on.

IMHO in the run in we were two stupid decisions from being champions. Smallwood and Baldwin. Fine margins.
