Oliver's Scoring Prowess (with Poll)

Discussion in 'City Talk' started by JonButterfield, Jul 24, 2024.

?

Oliver

  1. Oliver? Perhaps Kane/Greaves/Rooney/Charlton/Lineker in disguise. Goals galore

  2. Now a cemented Garden Gnome will score more (or not)

  3. I am a weathervane not sure, he could score or not (at confused.com)

Am I the only person that hasn't totally written Oliver off?

I think he’s fine as a back up target man.
The problem is that his wages will probably be far more than they should be for that role in the squad.

Oliver scored goals in league one so he shows he is capable. If he stays let’s see

That has just put another 100k on his transfer fee. That's extra for us to get rid of him.

Yeah he might be bad value.

Also, we don't just want a target man as back up.

Is he a target man though, Jon? I genuinely have no idea. I can't say what his strengths are really.

    Yeah definitely.

Though he's significantly faster than Cook.

His career average is one every five games and he's only scored more than ten once in a 14 year career. He is, was and will always be a rubbish hughes signing. Barry conlon was better

In the two years before coming here he scored over 30 in the league above so it shows he can score goals now

You continue to spout this incorrect stat about Oliver (he scored 27 league goals over 2 seasons) and say it shows he can score goals now when in reality, he's scored 3 league goals over the past 2 seasons. Jake Young has scored 18 league goals over the past 2 seasons but you think he still needs to prove himself in a city shirt which is true, but he's scored just 1 less league goal in a city shirt than Oliver has, so surely the same applies to him as well.

My god you are the master at making your own beliefs fit your narrative aren't you, and it makes you look really silly. He scored 27 league goals in 82 games over two seasons for Gillingham, even that is only one in every three which is the minimum expectation, and you keep coming out with him having scored goals at a higher level. Yes he did, three years ago, he scored 17 in 43 games, but in your eyes he's a potential world beater. Cook scored more in one season in 22/23.

Even in his other season at Gillingham he only scored 10, so he's basically had one acceptable season for a number nine, and it wasn't even a "Tom Pope" season.

Vadaine Oliver has scored 77 league goals in 387 games in a 12 year career. He's only scored double figures twice since moving into league football from the Conference in 2012, most of it at the level he plays at now. Other than the seasons in which he scored 10 & 17 his best seasons are 7 league goals. Jamie Walker has a better strike rate than him.

In what world does one good season and 77 goals in 387 games make him a good player ? In what world does 77 league goals in 387 matches make anything more than a below average number 9 ? In what world does 77 league goals in 387 matches give the slightest indicator that he could potentially ever have another double figure season ?

In what world does 77 league goals in 387 matches even make him better than Kurtis Guthrie ?

In what world is 27 a higher number than 30 ?

Take out his one good season, the one that blinded Hughes and made him sign a full time dud, and he has scored 60 in 341 games. That's a goal every 5.75 games.

Stop defending the absolutely total undefendable and realise he should give up football and get a job at specsavers, which if you think he is a good signing, so should you.

Vadaine Oliver is a dud, John McGinlay scored as many goals for us as he has, Arron Mclean scored more, and I don't see you defending either of them.

It's not a fact. 26 goals in 82 appearances, it's here in black and white.

I hoped for a free scoring CF when he came as well. Since then I have refined my hopes and very much hope we can send him elsewhere.

How many did he get for Stevenage? The guy has scored 3 goals since leaving Gillingham over 2 years ago, and it is well known that he is our highest earner. Another pathetic own goal by Sparks & Gent

Get rid by any means necessary

Hahaha you my friend are absolute comedy gold. Despite several posters giving you the proper stats, you STILL argue with them that they are wrong and you are correct(!) :joy::joy:

    Not a fact.

In the two season before joining us he scored 27 league goals in 82 league match (which is just about the minimum expected from your main striker) and 4 goals in11 cup matches (2 in the FA Cup and one each in the League & EFL Cup).

Would you accept 13.5 league goals a season from an average of 41 games if Cookie produced those stats ? Before that he had NEVER scored more than 7 in a season and had played at least 30 times in every season

You aren't even capable of producing the facts correctly to back up your ridiculous defence of him. When the dust settles he will be filed in the striker box labelled "Barry Conlon, Kurtis Guthrie, Arron McLean and Other Assorted Rubbish".

Give it up fellah, he's very firmly in the top five of our worst ever "experienced" striker signings and pound for pound more of a waste of money that HS2.
