    I am sorry but she does not come with a ‘clean slate’, she has been a Minister in the Government since 2012, so for 10 years, add on her two years prior to that and she has certainly been a member of Parliament, her party has been instrumental in the current state of affairs. So she has helped to make this dungheap!

    Utilities. If I add Electricity/Gas/Water, then the first two are £3,460 and water (which is not metered in my case) is a further £440 so a mere £3,900. Virtually 50% more than you are paying.

    Agreed, as I said earlier neither of the two candidates were ever going to come with a clean slate. Truss has held a top job in cabinet during this whole shitshow, as for Sunak, he was the sodding chancellor.

    I wonder what it was about the Indian fellow that 54% of the Tory membership didn't like?

    Nothing will change for the working man
    Tories have completely lost touch with reality
    No chance of them finding it either

    And addressing these pet preoccupations of yours is going to sort out the really big issues is it? **so funny**so funny**so funny

    Restoring decimated public services; repairing the NHS that her party has systematically wrecked;
    tackling inflation;
    keeping food in people's mouths and small businesses in business in the face of crippling fuel bills;
    getting her party's rich company donors to invest in our economy instead of giving all their profits to shareholders;
    providing decent public transport north of Watford; etc etc ad infinitum.

    These are the issues she'll be judged on and which will decide the result of the next election. Not your Colonel Blimp, 'bring back the birch' ramblings.

    Only to be succeeded by Suella Braverman, who'll have a damn good try at being even worse.

    Love your enthusiastic positiveness..lol
    I can assure you that my concerns are so much more important than those you have quoted to the silent majority in this country
    I assume for you to deny them points to you condoning them surely...?

    Forget that, then...given my performance with lotteries, I'd be much more likely to win the booby prize of paying double!

    Thanks to you both for the info. Water&waste used to be on the rates here, but some 30 years ago the municipalities realised they could make a lot more money by putting it on a meter...though that was all done "to encourage conservation". I suppose it has done so -- I only water plants that need it, generally just the edibles, and ignore the rest.

    Last year my utilities divided up almost into thirds: $1267 / £839 for electricity, $1434 / £950 for gas, and $1386 / £918 for water&waste. Then another $400 / £265 for the rental water heater. Electricity and gas always have been much cheaper over here, so nothing has changed in that line. Not surprising, really, given the natural resources here. Water however seems cheaper there. Here though the 'waste' component of the water bill comes to much more than the 'water' component -- it's how the municipalities (partly) pay for the water & waste treatment plants.

    I shall have to accustom myself to the financial shock when I eventually move back across the pond.

    Sounds similar to water here.
    Again once upon a time it was included in with council rates and then due to privatisation it went to water rates and now can either be water rates, based on historical value of house, or meter(new builds have meters). But again we pay more for waste than actual water supplied

    Allegedly happened about 18 years ago and was well reported in the media.

    Her husband obviously forgive her.

    Nice try mate, but not sure why that has anything to do with her ability to lead the nation now

    Can't help feeling that Truss is going to come unstuck.

    Some of her principles and priorities are in the right place but to deliver the more nuanced effects and limitations of government you need to be a truly effective communicator and she is pretty bloody awful at that. The left wing media, comics and Twitter are going to have a field day and she has nothing to fight back with.

    Everyone said the same about Maggie when she came to power, she proved everyone wrong and stood up to everybody that mattered very well.

    Maybe - but you don't get the same amount of time with social media and 24/7 news coverage.

    Thatcher turned into an amazingly effective communicator even if someone disagreed with her principles, Truss will not get the same time to polish that aspect of her persona. She'll likely become the Miliband of the Tory party of she can't nail that aspect almost immediately.

    She won’t win an election. Not because she’s really shit (she is). Or because Starmer is all of a sudden going to offer us a much better alternative (he won’t). It’s because I can’t imagine a sitting government getting another term when they’re worse off from when they voted last. Happened to the last Labour government, and it’ll happen to this lot. The Tories are done.

    Including Liz Truss. Change vs today's standard voting intention. LAB lead of 17 points:
    CON 29% (-5) change was -4.5, rounds to 5
    LAB 46% (+3)
    LD 11% (nc)
    SNP 4% (nc)
    GRE 3% (nc)
    OTH 7% (+2)

    From Survation
    Lab 414
    Tory 147
    LD 16
    SNP 51
    GRN 1

    Lab majority of 178

    Instantly lose ground with that appointment today.

    have you got a link for that? Last one from Survation I can find is 43/33 Labour/Tory with a majority of 13 seats so can not imagine that 46/29 gives a majority of 178.
