couldnt even get people to agree to proportional representation so no chance in a change to a directly elected PM

We have a system designed by the rich and powerful that ensures they stay in control. They will never agree to give that power up.

Doesn't and shouldn't work that way and you know it, unless you want to vote for a president...?

What's that? Act honestly and with integrity?

I have genuine confidence in her doing that compared to her predecessor. We'll have to wait for her to announce her policies for resolving the current set of issues.

Ah, much like Corbyn or Starmer would eh....?

Getting shut of net zero, stopping the invasion of criminal gangs, ending the stabbings/shootings in our major cities and locking up the eco warriors is far more important than a slice of cake....

Congratulations to Liz Truss and good luck.

If she is anywhere near as good as her hero Maggie, that will do me

Well this is the third female PM the Tories has put up.

Meanwhile the "diverse" Labour Party have a white male as leader. Like they have through their whole existence when elected within the party. The only time this hasn't been the case is during a caretaker role between electing a leader.

Nothing will change, absolutely nothing. She’ll say a few words that keep the Tory base and hard of thinking happy. Then back to the same old shite.

We knew that when the MPs pushed the vote toward two of the old cabinet.
The Tories had one chance to breakaway from the shitshow and they picked two people whom it would have been better sticking with Boris.

Starmer is as beige as Colin Todd but is miles ahead of what the Tories left themselves with.

Will be interesting to see who is picked for the cabinet now.

Surely Nadine Dorries is gone. Priti Patel should have gone years ago. I have zero confidence in whoever is going to be picked I'll be honest. Some are even saying Theresa Coffey is going to be Health Secretary, yes that picture of health.

Somewhere here -- I thought it was this thread but it wasn't -- I mentioned that Truss was the only one from the list of possibles that I'd go for, so I'm happy with the result. Minusses are IB's post above, and not being an enthusiastic Brexiteer; plusses are are an unblinkered view of Russia and its behaviour and strong support for Ukraine. Everything else is yet to be determined, but she has been dumped into a dungheap not of her own making: the aftereffects of the pandemic coupled with the side-effects of the war. Leaving aside the campaign "promises," it will be interesting to see what her deeds will be, and will they be enough regarding the economic crisis.

On that note, somebody help me out please -- for obvious reasons I only worry about utility costs here, and I take "utilities" to include all of gas/electricity/water & waste/water heater. I read that "utility" costs are to go up 80% to 3549 pounds, making them 1972 now, and possibly rising to 6000 next year. So that means, at current rates, CDN $2978 to 5359 to 9060. By comparison, last year here I paid CDN $4489, or 2973 pounds. But if the definition of "utilities" isn't the same, then the comparison is somewhat pointless. Also, I suppose, it depends on the size of the house, the number of people living in it, and how frugal/wasteful of resources they are.

If you are lucky you could win your energy bills on Good Mornings newest segment on ITV.

The utility cost talked about is just gas and electric. So doesn’t include water or oil if people use oil for heating. There is no cap on heating oil bills.

you can add at least £500 on for water

I hope it is a little more sophisticated than mere ‘luck’. Toss of a coin politics will not serve this country well.
