The City v Wigan match had one of the best block tackles I ever saw. I know I've mentioned it on here before but McFarland and Lloyd steamed into a 50/50 in midfield, the sound was awesome and if I remember right, they both were smiling when they got up, think there might even have been a joke shared but it was total respect for each other and the game.

Thanks for that. I like being able to clear up these questionable elements in my files.

Yes, that was a very nice way to start the season. But like the West Riding Cup, they fall into that middle ground between pure friendlies, and recognised first-team matches in League-sponsored competitions.

Took a look at old programmes to see if I could assist but to no avail. Here's a question for you chaps and chapesses of the time. Why the change in fixture date? Don't have any supplement either? 16140971134274517440669937196864.jpg

Weren't we "experimenting" with Sunday games at the time ? I seem to recall Ces Podd didnt play in them because of his religious beliefs.

Heck but what a player Ces was. Such amazing consistency. My first seasons as a wee one watching City, in awe of his athleticism. And then as I got a little older...really depressed at what I heard opposing fans - and some of our own - shouting at him.

Not true Ces played in the Sunday games, we did though experiment with Sunday games, our chairman Bob Martin thought we would get better crowds, it was continued in the 81:82 season but then abandoned

The original Sunday game was postponed due to torrential rain and rearranged after the official season ended on the following Friday night. Everyone didn’t have to finish the season at the same time in those days

    Cheers!

Always nice to have an audience, and even nicer when that audience helps the performer improve his material -- as happened here with the McFarland record.

So now we have gone 12 matches and another 3 points in the bag (after a dour match), how are the ‘dynamic duo’ fairing against their predecessors? ;)

Holy Statistics, Bigrod! I might have to start a new spreadsheet containing managers' match-by-match results... Now that would be one way to make sure my files get corrected...

T&S are still behind McFarland, but only just. Beat Walsall and they jump ahead, as McF lost match #13.

    Points:
    28: McFarland (9-1-2) -- corrected record
    27: Trueman & Sellars (8-3-1)
    26: Foster (interim) (8-2-2)
    25: Milburn (8-1-3)
    24: McCall (second spell) (6-6-0)
    23: O'Rourke (second spell) (7-2-3); Barker (7-2-3); Mulhall (7-2-3)
    20: Lawrence (6-2-4)

There were a few others close enough to 20 points that they might have joined the 20+ points crowd. However you look at it, T&S have done well, and I'm happy they've been made permanent. A few more wins and I too might start thinking that the playoffs are a possibility. Didn't Stuart say we could afford to lose 10 matches? GIven the general nature of the table this year, I think that number will be higher.

What a season this would/could be!

TBH Stuart had already lost 9 for us before T&S took over! But who knows what might happen? It has the been the most extraordinary and unpredictable of seasons because of Covid, and I think past records, points totals, predictions etc may go out of the window because of the obvious fixture pile up and players being unable to play.

I was thinking that yesterday. There were matches that we clearly lost or drew because of his inability to set a team up rather than the quality of the opposition. I'm thinking Walsall (D), Colchester (D), Carlisle (L), Bolton (L), Barrow (L), Orient (L), Harrogate (L) and worst of all Crawley (D) when it only took control and game management to win.

Matches where perhaps the 4/2/3/1 that T&S play would have yielded more points. His return of 13 from 16 was appalling, and had he managed to pick up just another 10 points and gain a respectable 23 from 16, we would be top right now.

Ifs/ Buts & Maybes, but an experienced manager like McCall, with the experience at his disposal (six of which started last night) should have been able to get the 1.44 points per match that the extra 10 would have yielded (not even playff form). Even if he had only managed to win the draws we would have six more points we would be in the playoffs and handily placed for a charge to the top.

Seems to me McCall had two big issues. First he couldn't (or wouldn't) bend on his stupid formation and second he had no clue about coaching "game management" into his teams.

Correction looking back it was a freak snow blizzard that weekend April 26 that caused the original Hereford game to be off. Very late on to be getting snow in late April but it caused road closures and big disruption that weekend. It had all gone within a couple of days as temperatures rose back to normal.

Unfortunately (and without wishing to disrespect Stuart) if he had managed to get another 10 points, he'd still be here
