Seen someone post this on Twitter, quite interesting and worth noting when predicting matchday squads.
As agreed last year from this season the amount of homegrown players needed in a matchday squad is increasing from 6 to 7 but the big change is that 1 club developed player must be in a matchday squad. A club developed player is defined as a player who has been with their current team for at least 12 months prior to the end of their U19 season i.e. they must be with the club for at least 12 months and signed no later than the end of the their U18 (2nd year scholar) year. http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/10827577/efl-clubs-approve-proposals-to-increase-number-of-homegrown-players-from-next-season

Looking around it probably means that Danny Devine is going to be in the matchday 18 a lot of the time with only him Hudson and Gunner (his u19 season was last season so just qualifys) who qualify and have made any sort of senior appearance. The other player who would count would be Sykes-Kenworthy but assume the plan is to still send him out on loan.

I'd guess Devine would get the nod over the other 2 as he seems more developed and can cover RB as well as midfield so can provide a bit of versatility.

Wouldn't mind seeing a bit more of Hudson if he's ready to take that step up

We have a "focus on youth", but will struggle to fulfil the "one homegrown player" rule, hahaha!

difference between youth like Patrick, robinson etc and bringing through players from the academy. If the players in the academy weren't good enough to make it when they bought the club then its unlikely in 2 years they managed to change recruitment and found players good enough as it won't happen that quickly. Just look at England it's taken over 5 years for when St Georges Park was built to start being successful in the under age groups and only over the next few years will them players get into the senior side regularly.

I think a lot of clubs could struggle with this new rule. Is it applicable in all leagues including the Championship?

Yep, all 72 team in the EFL.

Will be interesting as some teams don't have an academy like Brentford but doesn't seem they are exempt so they'll have to start recruiting players at the end of their U18 season to make sure they can fit the criteria.

Just had a look and there is a way round not having a club developed player in the squad. If you don't name one you just lose a sub, so can only name 6 rather than 7

Plus there is another get out option which is if you have sold 2 club developed players to a club in the same league or higher, not sure on the time scales as it doesn't say. So McBurnie could count as one until he is 24

33.12 If any Club has prior to the date of the applicable League Competition Match (including Play Off Matches) transferred the registration of two or more Club Developed Players and:

33.12.1 in consideration for the transfer of each Club Developed Player’s registration, the Club receives an initial Transfer Fee, Compensation Fee and/or compensation in accordance with the Youth Development Rules on transfer of the registration; and

33.12.2 each of the transferred Club Developed Players:

    (a) are, as at the date of the applicable Match registered as a Contract Player with a Club (or club) in the same division or higher (including, in the case of a Championship Club, the Premier League); and

    (b) are or will be aged 24 or under on 1st January in the Season in which the applicable Match occurs then, the Club will not be required to comply with the requirements of Regulation 33.11.
