Like this signing. Experience of promotion, put his head in.

All signings to come won't be "marquee"

Our defensive record isnt bad but it hoofing it 50 yards because they cant pick a pass doesn't help us at the other end. I get its probably more to do with GA but we have no ball playing CB's regardless.

Im underwhelmed by Byrne. I was expecting Kelly and Stubbs to be sat on the bench because the ones we brought in were an improvement. This improves absolutely nothing apart from Taylor who never even played anyway.

That's my point, there won't be any good backups if you wait until the season starts. We'd panic like we did last season and sign deadwood. I'm glad we're getting some business done early, whether Bryne is a back up or not at least he's got plenty of time with the squad and manager to be ready for the opening day. You seem to be more bothered about what order we sign players. They clearly wanted Bryne so wasted no time getting him whereas if we'd signed him near deadline day you'd assum he was a panic signing

He played in 3 of the last 6 games. They won 2 and lost 1. Hardly the ringing endorsement.

Byrne didnt kick a league ball until 16th December. They won 3 on bounce then he started the next 2 winning both. Then he started on the last day when lost to Wrexham.

Byrne started 10 league games for them last season and only 6 of those he completed 90 minutes. He also came off the bench 6 times. His influence on their promotion is been way overplayed. He played 936 minutes in the league!

His appearances were topped up by the EFL Cup.

But signing good back ups is just wrong, all signings should be brought in with the view they can be first choice players. Of course not everyone will end up been first choice, but if you sign with the thought in mind that this player is a back up then you're already making a poor decision. As I said we have good back up in the squad already, these players are solid but haven't proven they are promotional material with us so I'm happy for Kelly and Stubs to be the 'good backup'.

how is this an alien opinion to some amazes me!! We should be able to bring the best in this division to our club. The fact we don’t reflects poorly on Rupp and Sparks and Gent.

All very true but the driver to squad construction is solely money . We cannot afford a squad of say 26, all on top dollar . Football doesn’t work like that Wilsden , from the Prem to NL etc

It’s a shit pool signing and disingenuous by the club to suggest he’s some kind of player who was key in their promotion. Hope am wrong but this goes towards nothing been learnt and Rupps open letter about investment for the birds.

I'll be sorry to see Platt go if he does leave, most consistent centre back we've had the last two seasons.

I understand the logic that we need first choice quality players to be brought in. Its understandable, we lack quality in certain parts of the pitch

that being said, We will be playing with a back 5 for most of the season. We need bodies. Nobody for a second has said that hes gonna be a starter. Hes gonna be a backup. An if it comes to that, id rather have someone from a team that won the league last season an is a model pro for the younger lads to look up to than a PL loanee who's had no experience in the actual football leagues. Bryne wont be expensive. An if I had to guess, id imagine a large chunk of the budget will go on a quality CB starter. So as long as that goes through, I have no issue with City buying a dependable squad filler here an there, which in this case, is what the Stockport fans have alluded to.

He's not gonna set the world alight, but if he needs to play, he'l do the job. Hes strong in the air, which is something we lack, an he'l have that winning mentality, another thing which we lack

Sorry Kevin but that has absolutely nothing to do with the best players taking their time due to having options.

Unless of course you're suggesting that Taylor is in the "best players" bracket I mentioned?

Six points from 3 games. Title winning form, with him in the team, the match they lost was away at Wrexham.

My point was he only played in half of those games. If he was that influential he'd have played in all 6.

It's arrogance like this that makes us viewed as the Man Utd of League Two, massive fan base, big budgets, biggest ground, yet constantly underachieve and fail to attract the best managers and players. This is exactly the kind of attitude that sees many turning as soon as we have a bad result and is what we need to move away from.

Personally I'll wait to see what he looks like in a match before I register him as a squad player. and a poor signing, with our current fan base signings like Dave Evans & Gavin Oliver would be regarded as meh. They didn't do badly.

I also don't like that he was subbed off in a chunk of games. Maybe they were chasing or maybe it's was just tactical tweaks but a centre half would usually be the last person you're taking off unless it's the last 10 and you're going for broke.

The voice of reason as ever Dave. He strikes me as a decent signing too.

Why bother commenting on him at all then?

It's a new signing, of course people will pass comment and enjoy guessing if he'll be any good or not. Just because some write players off early doesn't mean that they won't get their full support when they pull on the shirt for the first time.

We have just signed a leading midfielder and we will have two players available next season who wil also enhance the team in Patterson and Young and that is already a significant improvement. When you consider that with his points ratio Alexander would have got us in the play offs had he been there all season. Byrne was part of a squad that achieved promotion last season and improves the squad if not the first eleven
