Indeed. No one could ever accuse Ontario of being enlightened when it comes to alcohol sales, though it is slowly improving -- at least wine and beer can now be bought in some supermarkets. Manitoba was far better, with private wine & beer stores in addition to the provincial commission, which I must say was very good. It helped that there I lived in easy walking distance of the commission's flagship store, and a couple of excellent private stores were fairly close as well.

Couple of cans of Vocation Life & Death for me tonight, but they are the last two beers in the house so I'll probably have to get stuck into the other half's Gin if we lose!

On the darker stuff, as it’s getting down to 5c now the nights are drawing in.

Spoilt for choice today, but went for a Great Lakes Pompous Ass English Ale. Might have a glass of port later.

Horror of horrors, I had no beer this evening. Had to pair my Bhuna with some old French stuff. Worked good. Good mood eclipses extravagance when we win 3-0. C8623C24-BDE0-4382-B72F-3EF46EE2A699.jpeg

Jeez, for a country that drinks so much beer, the USA brews some right dog water. You’re killing me with all these offerings you get.

Had a (small) Wellington Helles with the dinner burger; and shall try the (larger) Newark Helles again in another half-hour or so at supper. I e-mailed Newark about their cloudy Helles, and it is indeed a deliberate stylistic choice. They only lightly filter the beer, leaving some of the yeast in. But the 12-pack I've got was from just before they started the filtering, so I have the full cloudy works! Must remember to pour gently, and keep the tins upright for a while before opening. Something different at any rate, as I've simply never come across a Helles yet that wasn't bright and clear.

Sipping this one during the first half. @River_City_Bantam@River_City_Bantam have you tried it? It’s a reproduction of the stout that Albert first brought to Estonia, and then started brewing it down in Tartu - formally known as Dorpat. A very drinkable beer. Smooth and creamy. I really like the old style label. Well done to the design team.

No, that one I haven't tried, but I'll look out for it next time I'm there. Yes, that label is nice.

I'm more of a bitter and IPA man, even if I seem to be drinking mostly Helles and other Euro lagers at the moment. I think it'll be some more of the Newark Helles with supper tonight; it's not bad at all when one keeps the sediment out of one's glass.

Well, that was not a good day for one's teams. City's (lack of) performance in the morning was followed by the Blue Jays' humiliation in the afternoon: they managed to lose from being 7-1 up halfway through the game. Thus ended their playoff run -- and more than a few picked them as World Series finalists, if not also winners. At least I did find a new (to me) and decent IPA to try out:

I wouldn't call it very hoppy, not as much as I would expect in an IPA, but nonetheless a pleasant drink.

Harrumph! City are certainly driving me to drink... And to add to that, we are getting snow squalls today off Lake Erie. Anywhere between 10-50cm predicted. I'm not ready for winter yet -- though I did buy a new snowblower yesterday. Might need it later on today...

I started this thread mentioning bourride and sauvignon blanc, and so it was again today. A different local winery though -- Featherstone. Food and wine were at the quality level that City should be at.

Various beers possible for the evening pizza: Jever, Karlovacko, Czechvar, Lagunitas, and Wellington County. Not all of them, though that is tempting!
