I’m betting you’re happy she won it in straight sets. You’d have been asleep if it had gone into the third! Great victory. Made it look so easy, especially when the quality of the game was so high.

I suppose most are at the match, hence why this thread not as popular as it was during lockdown.
    Anyway, I’ll persist.

Seeing as Octoberfest is cancelled again, I thought I’d raise a glass or two. 056D8C56-9C52-4173-96D7-BADF7CC18FB2.jpeg

Coopers! Ages since I even saw some of that, let alone had some.

Nothing so exciting here today; either some Steamwhistle Pilsner or GLB Canuck Pale Ale or Wellington Brewery Helles. Or all, depending on the result...

    Taking it easy this afternoon.

Couple of local pales from the Pomona Island and Track breweries.

Paired with some Japanese psych rock for pre-match entertainment.

Choice is in short supply at the moment (awaiting a delivery) so, today, it's St Austell Proper Job.

Nothing so far today save for a much-needed revivifying VSOP cognac at tea. It has been an interesting and expensive week. Heavy rains Sunday night...entire basement under some 2"-3" of water come Monday morning...furnace dead...hot water heater dead...water water everywhere...

By the grace of God (or, the gods) it was clear water except for some sewage sludge around the floor drain, and everything important -- freezer, foods, books, household goods -- was spared, even if by only 1/2" or so.

But what a mess! Been cleaning up ever since. Now I need to make some platforms to get things that stay downstairs up higher off the floor, and move as many as possible of the books and bookshelves to the upper levels of the house.

Beer has definitely been needed at the end of each day! Tonight I think it'll be Amsterdam Brewery's Boneshaker IPA. Good strong stuff -- more revivification.

Wow that sounds very difficult. Is the property prone to flooding or have you had one of those 1 in a 100 year (in reality becoming much more frequent) deluges!

This was, I think, a combination of things. The garden has a bit of a wet side -- my neighbour on that side once said he planted the row of willows there to try to suck up the moisture, and the chap who came to fix the water heater confirmed that the whole region seems to be a wet one. So there is always water around. But the root cause of the problem was...roots. First thing the plumber did when he arrived was splash his way to the cleanout on the main stack, stick a camera down there, and see what was what. At one point in particular he really had to work at getting the camera through. Once he did punch it through, you could see the water start draining away from the basement. There was a mass of tree roots in my sewer line, and that combined with what had to be a sharp heavy downpour and, I suppose, the usual contents of a sewer line, just overwhelmed the line and caused the water to come back up the floor drain.

Ta! The running total is: St. Kitts basement floods: 1. I hope I never shall have to update that!

I really got lucky. The books had the narrowest escape, but escape they did.

Live and learn. I knew in Winnipeg that I had to get the sewer line cleaned very regularly -- every 1.5-2 years -- but here seemed to be different. There we had elms lining all the streets, and they were notorious for getting into the drains. Here I just have a maple out front, but the sewer line does run right under it. I think I'll have to follow the same schedule here.

And get a backwater valve and a sump pit & pump installed.

Indeed. At first glance I thought their prices were a bit dear, but maybe not -- my plumber charged just over $300, so roughly $350 with tax, for the inspection and root-cleaning, which works out to a bit over 200 pounds. The real expense will be the backwater valve and sump pump; they'll run to $4000 at least, probably $5000. At least my insurance will pay $1000 towards those costs, and they have paid for a new furnace. By the provincial code here, a water-damaged furnace must be replaced rather than repaired. And that was a brand-new furnace too; I had it installed back in February!

Can you not sell it on eBay to someone from a province which has different legislation? A big hit otherwise.

No such luck -- the furnace people took the old one away with them. They say that there is a provision in the code that says you can repair the furnace, but their governing body then has to inspect and approve the work. They already know, however, that the governing body will refuse approval. I did have them put a few patio stones under the new unit, though, to raise it some 3" off the floor.

But, as said, insurance paid for that in full, which is good -- as that cost some $5000. I lose my "no claims" discount for a while though, and if I have another claim within the next few years, they might deem me "high risk" and refuse to renew the policy. That would make a new policy, with probably another company, dramatically more expensive. Thus the need to get the valve and pump installed. They'll also be a plus in terms of the "sellability" of the house.

But back on topic...a lovely local barrel-aged chardonnay, from Strewn, with the dinner ham, and a choice of more Amsterdam Boneshaker or perhaps a Kaiserdom pilsner at supper. I'm either late with yesterday's match drinks, or very early with the next match's drinks!

Little bit of info. I live ‘horizontally’ 50 yards from a small river. My insurers changed underwriters and they suddenly increased the premium from approx £400 to approx £900. I explained that we were about 60 foot higher, but eventually changed insurers. They admitted they were quoting on an assumption l was a lot lot lower and actually had the wrong house!
