If that 1 quality striker is injured, rested or misfiring we are stuck with Angol and Cook yet again. One is injury plagued and the other isn't very good.

That duo aint taking us up.

I feel the biggest 'dilemma' of our summer. We need 'better'. Sum of the parts?

I could be criticised here but Angol & Gilliead could be part of our matchday squad. The rightful thought, would be to doubt these 2 as part of a 'Promotion pushing' squad

Yeah, it's dangerous to think too much of the players we've got, because you can make a case for several of them to stay - but it doesn't change that we've just a disastrous season, and we need to get better in there.

    We can't be complacent.

If we do keep pretty much an XI from this season, we need to make sure the competition for them has the potential to outperform them.

Fillipe Morais made a good point recently on an iFollow commentary. He said that players in Pereira's position tend to be amongst the highest earners in a squad. Therefore they have to deliver in terms of goal assists and goals scored or they are a luxury that most clubs, and certainly us, can't afford.

I love watching Pereira - he is so skilful. But would he deliver the goals and assists to justify his place/cost? Abo Eisa scored 14 goals in 67 appearances for a terrible Scunny side - that's a 1:1.5 goal ratio from a winger, plus any assists he made, which I don't know the stats for. Would Pereira deliver at that rate? I somehow doubt it

I think Cook is getting a raw deal a bit here. I'm not suggesting he's flawless or that we can't bring in better but 20 goals in 62 games isn't a bad strike rate for someone who apparently can't trap a bag of cement, is a terrible finisher and can't move due to being 7 stone overweight.

I definitely think he's still got something to offer in a quartet although his wages may determine that we'll need to move him on in order to recruit.

Probably not having Adams flogging them to death in training six days a week will make a difference on its own. But hopefully Hughes' approach of thoroughly investigating why he has recurrent injuries will pay dividends.
Look at Michail Antonio at West Ham. He has had recurring injury problems for years. Yet this year, after changes to his diet and training, he's looked more physically robust than ever, has played huge numbers of games and only missed a couple of matches with a minor injury. So it can be done.

I agree, although we're probably stuck with him because he's still in contract.
Neither Cook nor Angol will score us enough goals to get promoted. But Angol will contribute in many other ways apart from scoring. We need a more prolific scoring forward and more goals from midfield/wide players.

Hughes has played him in the deep lying midfield role recently. He seems better suited there, where his almost non existent goals and assists record is less of an issue. He's always been a hard worker, not afraid of a tackle, and good at ball retention but with no end product. Maybe Hughes has found Gilliead's best position?

He's had to change his game to be able to still play at this level. With the state of his knee, he cant really sprint anymore, he has to play cautious otherwise he isn't going to play anymore, we knew this when we offered him a deal so more fool us than anything.

The same leg has had an ACL & MCL tear along with hamstring tears, so it makes sense he wants to prolong his career. However, he isn't a wide man and asking him to play there and cut inside is a pointless task. Angol only ever looked good playing up front but with his ability, he'll need a partner. It's looking like Oliver is also a striker who needs a partner, as playing on his own with only attacking midfielders 20 yards away doesn't suit him. As most of Olivers touches in a city shit seem to be head high, 35 yards from goal trying to hold up for others. At some point, to get the best out of our strikers we need to go 2 up top in my opinion, as it looks like Cook and Harratt also worked well as a 2 for the last 10/15 last night.

Time and time again he ignored a player overlapping him who would have supplied crosses for Oliver but he consistantly ignored him and cut inside trying to take a player on or give a stupid 3ft pass to a marked player. In denying the ball for crosses he actually made Oliver look surplus as he relies on crosses to score. What a mess we are up front

You can stick any player anywhere on the field, but they become less and less of an asset the further away from what their prime role is. I'm not sure why we are hanging Angol out to dry on the wing, it's just not what he does well. Similar with Oliver, doesn't look suited at all playing the lone striker. People say we have options to change formation but generally a manager will have a preferred system and will more often stick to it.

I sense with Young he is the sort who will be very up and down, still a young lad finding his way.

To be fair to him he does try to make things happen but this makes him look even worse when he's having a bad one

There is a bit more to this deal as it could end up being TWO years.

Bradford City AFC is delighted to announce Lee Angol has put pen to paper on a new, initial one-year contract extension.

The deal sees the forward remain at the Utilita Energy Stadium for the 2022/23 campaign, with the option of a further season in claret and amber.

We can get 2. If we are going into the season relying on Angol as a first choice we are in for another long season.

Angol is a good signing, managed correctly like Hughes is doing not having him chase after lost cause balls he should last more than a third of the season.
Angol is good in the last third, good at turning defenders either passing in players or having an attempt at goal. We don’t want him chasing a long ball over the defenders that’s when he is more likely to injure himself. Hughes knows this and sets the style of play to best fit Angol’s abilities.
We played excellent football against Sutton, you would keep 70% of that team and build on that with some more quality.

If he can play 30+ games somehow it’ll be decent business imo, maybe we need to make sure he has lighter training sessions or doesn’t play Tuesday night games and cup games like Wes Hoolahan at Cambridge. He’s got the natural talent and experience so it’s about getting him through as many games as possible, it’s unrealistic to expect 40+ games out of him he’ll just break down again.

Realistically we can probably hope for one other quality striker, two or 3 is unrealistic when you consider decent strikers aren’t going to be willing to spend large chunks on a league 2 bench and Hughes also seems to favour 4/2/3/1 type formations. Then a young prospect and we should be good to go. We need more goals from the 3 behind as much as getting a striker to do all the scoring.

Interesting how we have an option in our favour as well, it won’t be possible with every player but hopefully where possible we can be smarter with contract negotiations.

He’s just not mobile enough, something one is born with. Last 15mins against a tiring defence if chasing a game fair enough….. as a starter … not for me.
