Agree. The ball rarely sticks. It is the main reason why Cook is so ineffective as a lone striker.

I'm not totally enamoured that we've given Angol a new contract, it just smacks of more of the same.
The lad's a great heart, and an intelligent player, he tries to do the right things and obviously takes in what coached to him.
However, we'll get his availability for 20 games at most from him, with another return of around 6 goals.
For the attributes I mentioned in his game, he also has a regular tendency to screw the ball 6" the wrong side of the post when in good positions.
If this time next year he's on 20+ goals, I'll gladly hold up my hands and admit the club was right and I was wrong.

Im pleased and it does appear that the revised way we are “ looking after” players is reaping the rewards.

If we can follow it with a 2 year deal for Vernam ..I’d be one happy bunny.

The fact we haven’t announced such is an omen ? His agent is playing the field perhaps?

I think Cook will leave us this summer, paving the way for a couple of younger more mobile strikers

Sounds like a win win for the club then and something we haven't mentioned is probably Angols desire to stay.

I know with his injuries the offers might not flood in but he could have hung around for a month or two weighing up whatever came in so imo it's a positive that he didn't hang around in accepting.

Surprised people are expecting Cook to leave. I know he’s not the mobile option we needed this season but when the loanees return and Lavery and Robinson leave (surely they won’t be offered new deals), our only other striker is the injury prone Angol. Are we really gonna bring in three forwards??

He won’t be short of offers at this level but I’d rather keep him, personally.

I more meant we can't be planning for him to be one of the first choice strikers as we can reasonably be expecting him to be out a hefty chunk of the season... it should just be a bonus if he's available, rather than a crisis when he's not

He’d have struggled to get a better deal elsewhere with his injury record.

I said when he signed that Lee Angol is a class act at this level and that has proven correct. Obviously his injury record is an issue. But he's also not a 25 or even 20 goal per season striker. So even if he can be nurtured more carefully than Adams did, and plays more games, he won't get us promoted on his goals alone. He is brilliant at holding the ball and linking play. But we need a fox in the box to play alongside him, or else a bunch of attacking midfielders/wingers who'll chip in with far more goals between them than our current bunch do.

If we’ve any serious ambition to go up then Cook isn’t the answer.

I can recall making several exasperated comments in match threads on here about decent balls into Cook's feet either bouncing off him or being nicked away because he can't trap a football under pressure.
In his defence, I don't think he's a natural target man. He may look like one, because of his stature, but he's actually a striker who prefers to face goalwards. He's just the latest of our forwards - Doyle and Vaughan being the two most obvious and shocking examples - who've been wasted playing a back to goal target role for which they're palpably unsuited.

Just a quick summary and I'll leave it there.

Cook, as it stands has a 1 in 3 strike rate for City and that's in poor and struggling sides so the law of averages suggests he'd get around 15 next term.

If we improved sufficiently around him there's nothing to suggest, in a side dominating games, he couldn't improve that output by 3 or 4 goals and that would put him around 20 for the season.

I'm not saying we can't improve but some of the comments on here are waaay over the top and I honestly don't believe that we've the pull or the finances to bring in another 2 better strikers than Cook.

Jesus what a set of toss pots some of our fans are, just a few months ago most were screaming for Angol to be given a new deal and now into a few games they turn on him. After the injuries he suffered last season maybe he's a little cautious when playing and maybe the management team are to with him .

Well apart from anything we better not be paying Angol first choice striker money given his horrific injury record, should leave money in the budget for at least 2 first choice level forwards.

With injuries and a sporadic score ratio, 34 in 149 games across 7 seasons, I'm not sure Angol is the type of player that would be first choice but compliment a forward line.

The last time he managed over 1/2 dozen goals in a season was Mansfield in 17/18 with 9 from 29 despite only 4 from 26 in 19/20 at Orient. He's been decent on the eye but in a struggling team....

It's not a criticism of the resigning but a cautious tale of where the bar lies.

Angol is certainly a very good striker at our level. Whether he can somehow overcome his track record with injuries is questionable and a risk for the club. I'm sure the club is very aware of this. The current season for us where he has played 17 league games isn't a one-off. It's the norm. In the last 5 seasons, he has played between 11 and 29 league games each season for his then club. I'm not expecting much better than this next season so additional strikers of a similar quality will be necessary. If we finish up with the likes of Robinson or Elliott or Lavery again, it's going to be another long season!

This is a good deal. The lad is the best forward we have.
Rest those hamstrings over the close season and proper man management , could well help him play on a more regular basis. The inter play between him, Vernam, Walker and lord luton is quite refreshing for div 2
Although the other 3 might not be around next year. I suspect his was the easiest deal to get over the line.
I also hope Andy Cook stays, you sometimes need a battering ram and i am sure Hughes can get him slightly fitter.
Stop buying him fish and chips for a start.
