Well you have had enough time to make 4,491 posts, which if you are ‘too busy’, is very very impressive.

No it is not for me, or another Mod to ‘figure’ questions, it has to come from the BT membership. You have very strong views, as do others, it is up to you to take the time and care to compose your questions.

The Americans say ‘don’t talk the talk, walk the walk’, well start putting all your thoughts together and then type them up as coherent, detailed and incisive questions.

As we are 3rd in the league there are only two teams doing better at the present moment.

As a coach in grassroots football I remember the EPPP, the idea was to encourage the best English talent to be in the Premiership. Saw through it straight away as just another way for PL clubs to hoover up potential talent at minimum cost. Again to the detriment of lower league clubs. They want their cake and eat it and then three more slices as well!! I seem to recall that Lincoln or Grimsby basically packed their academies in within months saying it wasn't good value. Think Crewe thought about it as well.

4 players over nearly 20 years, the majority of whom left in or before their early teens, isn't us building a conveyor belt of talent. I couldn't say for certain, but I'd expect that the majority of clubs with academies in the 2-3 leagues below the premiership have similar numbers of young players with potential hoovered up by the big boys. Its not a reflection of anything we're doing.

To me, a conveyor belt of talent is that during most seasons we have 1-2 young players coming through our ranks, or joining us after being released from other, bigger clubs, who establish themselves as first team players with potential for resale. Wood is a good example - we need to find more like him on a regular basis. Then, its a conveyor belt.

The Parkinson cycle wasn't built on emphasis of youth. Quite the opposite. He went for seasoned pro's, generally constrained by the short term financial landscape we had and benefitted from cup runs.

That list is hardly testament to a successful academy 'conveyor belt'.

Cleverley left us as an eleven year old 18 years ago. Wisdom left us 11 years ago; Green 8 years ago and most recently McBurnie about 4 years ago. And we only picked him up after he was released by Leeds' academy. That doesn't seem to be a great track record for an established academy. And in the future, EPPP won't provide the same benefits we've had in the past from these kinds of players.

Looking at it from a different direction, the £5m you quote which we've made from these players doesn't compare favourably to the cost of running an academy. A typical Cat 3 academy such as ours currently costs around £300-400k to run per season. On this basis, I can understand why a number of lower league clubs have closed their academy since EPPP was introduced.

    Great analysis.

Your basing us not moving forward after just being relegated. The change since Edin left is huge and its obviously going to take a while to see the benefits - even you, a business man, must realise that. On the pitch its moving in the right direction, seems it off it too but I'd still like supporters group(s) to be more involved and more vocal about what's going on rather than just these meetings with WOTP etc.

I agree , for some clubs it would be madness to continue to fork out so much on an academy.

You could argue though its been the sell on clauses that pretty much kept us solvent during the dark days of "deficit" year on year.

Spending £400,000 each year on the Academy is just money wasted by the club, With the EPPP now stopping any decent returns on player sales and very very few players making it through to the first team the smart move would be to spend the £400,00 on players,
Just think of the possibility of buying one or two £200,000 player each season and what that could do to improving the team and chances of getting to the championship, The Academy and bringing on young players is noble but does not make any sense to Bradford City as it stands,

Your comments re Academy status are right, Dennis. I don't remember which season, possibly 2013/14 we played Colchester, the game was beamed back to VP, we lost badly with an awful performance, made worse as I was the only Director there, my colleagues failing to tell me whilst away on holiday about the beam back!, getting a huge blow out on the way home and ending a 12 hour journey on a truck.
The good thing which came out was a discussion with Robbie and Richard Cowling, the U's owners who planned to upgrade the Academy to Cat 2, which they did. Robbie told me the cost would be an extra £800k per year, making the total in the order of £1.2 million. They put all their resource at that and were relegated to L2 in 2016 and won't be back any time soon. Their Academy is hailed as very good but has not really produced and with small crowds they are stuck.
    A lesson there somewhere.

Colchester were one of the first lower league clubs (if not the first) to improve their academy to Cat 2 after EPPP was introduced and as you say, it costs the owners a lot of money each season for that privilege. They lost Cat 2 in one season but then regained it the following year but there is a huge commitment to maintaining it at that level. It's a big gamble from the owners and well done to them but I'm not convinced that having seen a list of the academy graduates that the benefits get anywhere near the investment the Colchester owners have made.

At the other extreme is Brentford who already had a Cat 2 academy which was costing them nearly £2m each season to run. They closed it 4 or 5 years ago because of fears that London PL clubs would simply poach their youth players under EPPP and they'd receive a pittance in return. Brentford changed its strategy, reduced its costs and went down the 'cast off' route for slightly older players hoping they could find an unclaimed jewel (sounds familiar!). I'm not aware whether they've yet had any success.

Brentford have made £10’s millions in player sales in recent years. But without research I couldn’t say whether the players were cast offs. But they’re very successful at developing players and selling them for big money, which has helped them arguably punch above their weight in the championship .

I thought we also got some money for Niall Heaton who went to Liverpool as a youngster.

They have done a remarkable job on that thanks in part to being bankrolled in the Championship by their owner. They still make enormous losses despite their success in the player transfers although Benham has said that the plan is to become self-sustaining in the near future.

What Benham has done along with Rasmus Ankersen is to use the 'moneyball' approach to find and develop players using statistics and analytics. Apparently that approach is widely used in sport in America, particularly baseball and NFL to identify under-valued players cast-off by their previous clubs. Benham and Ankersen also own a Danish club which won their superliga a few years ago and qualified for the Europa league supposedly on the back of the moneyball approach. I suspect there'll be other owners looking at the moneyball approach in English football.

We did. Think it was £50k with add ins which never materialised as he didn't make it. Came back to us, think he's at somewhere like Kidderminster or Nuneaton now after a spell with Alfreton.

Thanks for confirming the information about Heaton.

Apparently he had been on the books at Guiseley! Not sure if he has retired from the game? https://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=76798

I also thought there was a young goalkeeper who went to Liverpool a few years ago, probably still in the youth set up if he has remained with them.

    BANTAMS SMALL TALK

After attending another fans media meeting on Monday 14th October 2019. Several things were discussed.

This included the ongoing and recent usage of smoke bombs. That the vast majority of our fans do not want. This is putting our club to shame and risking fines and punishments that are not needed. Those who use or condone them by saying no pyro no party and those not in favour are boring. Well were not boring they are dangerous and hazardous and can cause severe problems for people. Especially those with medical issues The club is rightly working hard with police to capture those responsible. Flares or smoke bombs are dangerous when used inappropriate way. Action will be taken at against those responsible at some stage, despite some saying nothing will happen. Yes the same fans help and create a great atmosphere. Which is great However this can be done with out the use of flares and such iteams.

It was also discussed that Julian has spent cash on players to build depth to our squad. Whilst at the same time our club is on a safe financial footing. We have 1 of the best budgets in the league.

Our players are very happy at the club once again. They want to be here and play for there shirt. They say moral and the feeling is great. They cant understand how it felt like it did last season. The club are making a step forward gradually and will continue to do so in the right and best way forward.

Despite work and other restrictions I am delighted to help the club do this both on and off the pitch when able to. So lets keep on supporting this magnificent club. Whilst stopping things that bring shame on our club. Together we can stop this.
