I'd argue you only need one "hard as nails/take no prisoners" defender as you need other complementing skills to go with that - saying this in general terms and not in relation to Tomkinson and whether he is or isn't etc

But what I would argue, and said the same last summer, we still haven't managed to recruit that real vocal leader in defence. I was kind of wondering if Byrne would be it but he isn't. Shepherd probably the closest but he's young. We desperately need that person in our defence.

 

Based on what we saw in a City shirt, I don't think Tompkinson is any better than what we already have, so a no from me.
