Wingers doesn't always mean headless chicken speed merchants. Clever players who can make space, hug the touchline spreading play etc, creating gaps. With Cookes, and Clarkes ability to pick a pass they are not people you leave in space with time on the ball the same way you don't leave speed merchants space. Formations are good. Good players crucial. McCall tried to fit good players into a formation and it didn't work

 

I don't disagree, but we need to inject some pace into our forward line otherwise we'll become too one dimensional.

 

Don’t think we are going to use wingers very much under these two and we have Stevens and Burrell if we need pace. Can’t see anymore signings unless anyone leaves

I wouldn't be too sure on that. Trueman has said in the presser this afternoon that the window isn't over until the deadline shuts and if the right player/s become available, they will look to make the right decision. I think we are in a very strong position going into the final few days of the window - we've done a lot of good business already and the pressure is off. There could well be clubs that were hoping to get certain players off the wage bill and have been holding out for the right price but the offer hasn't come. The closer we get to the close of the window, the more desperate they might become and the chance of us getting a good last minute deal goes up. A dangerous approach if you are banking on doing all your business in the last few days, but as things stand, I'd say we are firmly in the driving seat to possibly nab a last minute bargain. (Just to add if we don't, it will still have been a brilliant window).

I'd have Wood or FCD ahead of him in that role, probably even Paudie (not accounting for the fact you'd then have to play someone else in their position). I'm amazed so many people feel AOC would be the obvious choice to play there if there was an injury, particularly over Cooke who is at least a centre midfielder. They should all be banned from using the term square pegs in round holes (a term I can't do with anyway tbh) ever again!

 

That said, I wouldn't be too fussed if he had to fill in for a game or two, he has done it before
