Jamie Walker (with Poll)

Not getting you to read my contracts Sergio. We've triggered the one-year contract extension for Jamie Walker. If he stays for a further season beyond that, it'll be because of a totally new separate contract offer.

 

I don’t think Jamie is upset, he’ll be earning the same money for another year whether he’s fit or not.
With the new deal (that he rejected) he’d have only earned the same if he played every game and earned more if he scored.

 

We exercised his 1 year deal rather than release so he can take comfort in that...

I said yesterday that I couldn't see us doing this for precisely this reason so I'm quite surprised it's happened. I'm pleased he will be here for another season but the way it's being done doesn't sit right with me.

 

Why doesn’t it sit right? The club have done absolutely the right thing. Jamie is a great player at this level when fit and it means we can ask for a fee should anyone else want to take a chance on him on a longer deal.
Fantastic commercial business by the club.

 

Absolutely crucial that the medical staff and training program is focused on getting the best out of Jamie Walker if he can stay fit and avoid injury, then he’s a great asset

 

His injuries are never really muscle injuries. They’re impact injuries from fouls because of the way that he plays.

 

Doubt we will see him play that much next season.

Agree. That and GA and his team manage him correctly eg game time. Many times last season Walker was on his arse but was left on the field. If we are working with a smaller but more competitive squad, use it.

Great player at this level and probably the level above.

More than likely he will just coast through it?Tends to happen when a player gets an option triggered rather than sign a new contract.

 

Based on watching him for the last 2.5 years he doesn't strike me as the coasting type. It would be a complete 180 in terms of his character and career to date if he did that. I know what you're saying, and it could be the case for a lot of players, but I think Walker is an exception to that rule.

On what is that based?

 

I think he means why didn’t we do this at the first opportunity? Rather than trying to get him cheaper? As I have already said you cannot incentivise genuine injuries. If he is prone to injuries so be it if we can do something about we do it, but otherwise it is a risk.

 

I don’t agree. He has a year to display talents not only to City but other prospective clubs.
