Jamie Walker (with Poll)

Discussion in 'City Talk' started by Silverbantam, Apr 28, 2024.

?

Are you happy with Jamie Walker remaining a City Player

  1. Yes give him a 2 year flat contract

  2. Yes give him a 2 year incentivised contract

  3. Yes extend his current contract for a season

  4. Offer him a 1 year deal on improved terms

  5. No, sadly injury prone, there are better options out there.

We need to be quick about it then, the clock is ticking. If the club want him to stay that much, why didn't they just trigger the clause straight away, and perhaps negotiate something else like they are doing with Halliday and Pointon?

I'm not as convinced as you, that he will be here next season, I hope you are right though.

Halliday and Pointon are getting pay increases. If Walker is under contract why is he going to take a pay cut?!

Club can trigger the option if he rejects the new deal. It puts the club in a stronger negotiation place.

Whilst it’s true the club can trigger the extention, if this is against the players wishes, that would be my concern. But having met Jamie up at Barrow a few weeks ago he didn’t come across as being like that.
Of course he wants a 2 year deal for longer security and I’m led to believe we’ve offered that, albeit much of the deal is incentivised by how many games he plays.

Maybe the club see Pattison as the natural replacement for Walker. If he's over his injury, the way I saw him playing was very similar to Walker but he looked to have more of a goal threat. Maybe the club don't see Walker playing as often under this scenario, and don't want to have an expensive player sat on the bench.

Yes, what I am saying is if we automatically triggered his deal then tried to change it then why would he accept less (the only reason City would change it)? He would just say lets stick to this for 12 months and reopen negotiations in June 2025.

As things stand, we have offered him a longer deal but less money each season. As things stand, he will be out of contract in 6 weeks. So that's the incentive to sign up. If another club comes in, then we may have to renegotiate or if he says he wants to go, trigger his existing deal so we can get a fee.

    Club done the right thing.

Maybe done the right thing commercially, but psychologically we all like to feel valued and wanted...or I'm just a soppy git :joy:

Obviously not like that here, as we have two players (both who potentially could have been released) who had options in their favour, that they (the players) have taken up, meaning we couldn't release them or offer reduced terms if we wante dto

We have an option in our favour that means if we want to we can trigger an extra year at the same terms. So essentially he has another year left on his contract. The issue seem to be that we have offered him a longer contract at lower terms. If he rejects that then we simply withdraw that offer and enforce our extension.

I must be the only person who doesn't see this happening. The whole reason his option wasn't triggered when Halliday and Pointon's were is because the club want him to accept reduced terms. I just don't see the club changing their mind on this. Either he signs the new contract or he goes imo.

I don't want us to lose Walker, but like anyone he is far from irreplaceable. The club have clearly made an offer incentivised around appearances. So we are back to the same argument - a 30 game Walker or a 46 game someone else. Either way the club should not be held to ransom. Does JW want to play for BCFC or not!

It all feels uncomfortable. Commercially it is right for a good player but unable to play for half a season. Nevertheless, we want a happy player who wants to play for us and will give his all. So other clubs have a very short time slot to come and get him and be in a position to offer more.

I think we also have to take into consideration the restrictions on the number of ‘Senior’ outfield players the club can have. Sadly both Pattison and Walker have been unavailable for significant periods of time. Had they been able to play, we may have got into the Play Offs. Can we afford to take the risk, it is a gamble for the club as well as Jamie Walker.
l like what l see about Jamie as a person. Undoubtedly he is a good player. If he is confident in his own ability and fitness, then an incentivised deal may well be a decent compromise.

Ah nice one - that's some good clarity, and I suppose makes sense - it's a bit unfair to wind a contract down until the last day, though nothing would surprise me!

Yes & No. The way I see it is we have made him a counter offer and if he doesn't accept (by the deadline) we will trigger the one year extension. Same with Platt. Either way, I think we keep him.

Walker will be a top earner and I imagine only just behind Smallwood. He missed 21 games last season 16 of them being in the league and struggles to do 90 mins. He missed 28 the season before with 22 of those in the league.
Hes too expensive to be missing so many games imo. He will be 31 over the summer. I’d take the one year extension and let him leave next summer, unless someone stupidly offers us a fee for him.
